Boy or umbilical cord???

edited July 2015 in December 2015 Moms
We found out today we are having a bouncing baby boy! Unfortunately I won't know if he's healthy until the doctor calls me later today or tomorrow because she was rushed into delivery. I have heard horror stories about mommies finding out they are really having girls in the delivery room so now it's stuck in my head. Opinions??? The tech seemed VERY convinced he is a he but I need an extra push.

  • Loading the player...
  • Because a really good friend of mine was told by this exact tech she was having a girl and ended up being a boy which is kind of a hard mistake to make but it still happened so I was looking for extra opinions? My bad I obviously came to the wrong place
  • I would be unsure by that picture too. Don't let other posters bring you down. I am having 2 boys and good gracious if that really is his "boy parts" (as my ultrasound has it written) then he is well endowed ;). I haven't tried to post a pic but let me see if I can. I guess my phone won't let me right now

    FET #1 - March 2015 -- BFP twin boys
    Lost one twin June 2017
    FET #2 - August 2017 -- BFP single girl
    Miscarriage Oct 2017
    IVF #2 - Jan 2018 - 13 eggs retrieved down to 1 blast
    IVF #3 - June 2018 - BFN (transferred 2, 1 from previous cycle and 1 adopted embryo)
    Break from TTC and IVF
FET # 4 - Unknown start date, waiting to finalize everything

  • Exactly! I mean I'm sure she's zoomed in to a degree and she did say he was peeling but oh my god...
  • This is entirely a guess, but that looks like an umbilical cord to me. Just by the shape and position. Again, guessing here... I'm sure your tech saw definitive proof if they said that!
  • Today my tech told me that girls have 3 lines and boys have "turtles." That appears to be a boy to me, but I'm not a professional.
  • Agree with PP, we won't be able to tell you anything the tech didn't.
Also, it's a little weird to post a fetus' genitalia to a bunch of Internet strangers.
I know you're excited about your baby and knowing their sex, but unfortunately, we are not the correct people to ask these questions to. I'd wait and ask your doctor when they call back. Fx the doctor also tells you everything looks good and lo is healthy!

Agree with this - that seems to be a bit more than just a boy part - I don't remember it ever looking like that with DS - I would maybe go to an elective ultra sound place and have it redone to rest your mind - especially if that u/s tech has a history for being wrong in the past.
  • The elective ultrasound is a great idea. We did one before anatomy scan so we could be 100% sure either way. If you have a little extra cash and can find a reputable place to go to then go for it. It's 2 bonuses first you get to see your baby again and be sure that the first tech was right (or wrong)

  • We're having a girl and our ultrasound looked nothing like that. If you are really concerned I'd do an elective US just to make sure. :) congrats either way!
  • I would trust your tech. This is one of the many things they are trained for. I am having a boy and the picture I was given is very similar to what you have. The picture is zoomed in and will look bigger then it actually is especially since baby is still pretty tiny (a pound or less). My little guy was only 11 ounces at the time of my ultrasound yet looks huge in most pictures.

Or you could wait for the next time you a sonogram and just ask the tech to double check.... Because you know..you don't have to pay extra or make an extra appointment for that. IJS

Not all hospitals do another ultrasound after the A/S. My hospital will not do another now that I have had the A/S, unless of course something medically necessary arises. So I am choosing to do an elective US as the tech was not able to fully be confident that I am having a girl as she was a bit uncooperative.

*Not sure why my post is stuck in the quote box..

I am having a boy and my sonogram looked just like that. Also it was confirmed by 2 different ultrasound techs at different places and both looked like that. My tech said she knew from a different angle and then moved to that angle for the one to print out for me to prove it was a boy. Your tech knows what they are doing and to me that is definitely a boy.
  • Will they do another U/S at any point? If not there's always the 4D one, Its pricey but it might help with a for sure answer. I found out I'm having a boy too but they gave me a different angle its between the legs so the penis looks different, but I'm sure its just the angle.

I would trust your tech more than anyone on this board with no medical background (no offense ladies ;) ) Mine looked just like this and were having a boy. Our tech also mentioned something about seeing through the cord and not a penis, or vice versa, I don't quite remember. If your still unsure, I would ask your doctor before doing an unnecessary scan.
  • No they won't do another u/s unless there's a medical reason. I'm waiting until my midwife calls and if she doesn't put my worries to rest I'll get an elective u/s done. Thank you to all the HELPFUL ladies. It's very appreciated.
  • Agree with PP. Also having a girl. Our ultrasound looked nothing like that. Just saw three lines.

If you read my post I don't know if I have a healthy baby or not yet AND again a friend of mine is now returning all of her baby shower items (which is a lot of stuff) with a newborn and I am at the brunt of all of her complaining. I'm sorry this is not something I want to go through. If I used the wrong wording to suit you. I apologize

True, but who said OP even went to a hospital in the first place? OB's have private offices and can still be rushed to delivery.  IJS

ETA: If you look at OP's comment and re-read her post, she still doesn't know if her baby is healthy or not. She will probably have another A/S.

  • Having a boy and that's what mine looked like. Again, I'd trust the tech and doc. My tech could tell within about 5 min it was a boy and then confirmed it 4 times after her initial "educated guess"
  • Just saying that's all that matters in the grand scheme of things. If you're that worried about having to return things, go neutral.
  • @Jonesy288 I should have stated I was not directing this exactly towards OP. Was just stating in general because until today at my appointment I didn't know this would be the last routine ultrasound.

That's fine, but I was responding based on OP's post and comment. So the in general answer wasn't relevant.

  • That's what my boys looked like.
  • A good solution would be to get gender neutral items until after The baby is born. They can check 15times and still be wrong so if your really that worried I suggest gender neutral stuff until you know for sure at delivery. I personally am doing gender neutral until I know for sure. Just a thought. As per PP these are professionals and know best.
  • I was told at two different level 2 ultrasounds that I'm having a boy, and yours looks a lot like mine. I'd trust it and then just ask them to reconfirm next time around :)

thats probably partially umbilical cord, but your tech was able to tell more than we can by his little pelvic bump, girls are suppose to have a flat pelvic area while boys have a "turtle shell", and depending on the angle of the picture is whether the little turtle has a head or not.

Im sure if they told you boy, that you'll have a boy. so Congrats on your little man <3

And to those who are freaking out about the baby's little parts being shared...Keep in mind where you are & what else has been shared in these posts...everyone is excited about their baby and sharing their experiences, no matter what those experiences are. If you cant control your hormones and just be nice, go over to the bitchy Monday posts & get it out there.

HA! Love that you responded like that. Some "posters" are just so negative and RUDE.

I'm sorry I offended you with my unborn babies penis. Lol oh wait? Aren't we all pregnant. Pretty sure we've seen one before

I didn't say I was offended, I said it's weird to post photos of your child's genitalia to a group of Internet strangers.
Yes it's "weird" to post a sonogram picture on a website dedicated to pregnant women and their sonogram pictures...REALLY?!

Yup that's her opinion. And it's my opinion as well. It is totally weird to post your child's genitalia on a public Internet forum. There are creeps out there.

OP, congrats on your baby boy!

A, This site is not "dedicated" to sonogram photos.

LOL I'd love to hear your opinion on Breast Feeding in public, which is probably the only thing I find "creepy" about babies in general. Cuz there are websites dedicated

Ummm its dedicated to PREGNANT women. It's safe to assume there will be sonogram pictures. Hell, I can't even tell on my own what things are. So I really wouldn't classify it as a dp. Which is essentially what people apparently think is weird.
  • @JenScheil So you think BFing in public is creepy? Why? First of all it's MY breasts not my child's genitalia. Two completely different things.

But why on earth would you or anyone find a child eating creepy???
