When to "Buy Out" Registry?

My baby shower is this weekend (woo!!!).  I am wondering when is a good time to buy out our registry.  We are not due until 10/31, but I am a teacher and also a grad student and in a few weeks life will be extremely hectic and getting to the store could be difficult (the baby store is very far away).  The only thing that is up in the air is whether or not people from work would throw a small get together, but I would think that would be super informal and people could always just do clothes.  Am I safe to go get all of the essentials after this weekend?

  • I wouldn't - you're still 3 months away. Other people will buy gifts along the way, I'm sure. I know it's exciting and tempting, but I'd wait!

  • My shower is also this weekend and I'm planning on purchasing the rest of the items shortly after it. But I am 31 weeks right now, so a little ahead of you. I just got my registry completion coupon in the mail yesterday, so maybe you could wait until you get that (if you expect to get one).
  • It depends on where you register. Some stores won't offer the completion discount until a few weeks before/after your due date. You might want to double check.
  • I would just get what you essentially need.  I understand the feeling of wanting to go ahead and purchase the items so you can be done with baby's room, etc and feel like everything is done!  And yes!  Wait for the coupon if you get one!

I plan to be sneaky and change my date as soon as the showers are over  ;)

BUT at BuyBuyBaby I can use the 20% off coupons (I have a TON that don't expire until 10/30), so for most things I would not need that coupon.

  • I would wait. I bet the school where you work would throw you a shower (if they are good coworkers :) ) and you are right most of them would probably do clothes, but some of your closer friends at work may go in together and buy something big off your registry. Personally I'd wait until the end of September.

Good luck in the new school year! I'll be starting back too next Friday!
  • We had our shower on 7/19 and got almost everything from our registry. I only had a few small things left to get, so I got them this past weekend.

Our oldest goes back to school in three weeks and his birthday/birthday party are the week after. Knowing how busy August and September are, we wanted to get our shopping done and as much of the nursery settled as possible before then!
  • We had our shower on 6/27 and a second on 7/5 and only about 6-7 items were purchased from our registry... and that was all small stuff (socks, a sleeper, etc). The rest of the gifts I received were random. I feel like there is a divide when it comes to registries: some families are strict registry shoppers; and some (like mine) are last minute, run to whatever store and grab something shoppers (whether they need it or not). My wedding was nearly the exact same way too. (And my coworkers aren't throwing me a shower... and I feel really weird asking...)

I guess what I'm saying is: it depends on how much your friends & family purchases from the registry and how prepared you want to be. I don't want to way until 2 weeks before baby arrives to be buying stuff, so I'm doing it now.

Buy the essentials after this weekend, wait a bit for everything else is my advice.
  • You can always order it all online. Normally they don't give you your 10 percent completion coupon visit until a few weeks after the shower date at buy buy baby. Or I think they said 8-10 weeks from due date. Not sure where you are registered but I'll prob wait til whenever that coupon comes. Essentials like diapers you can always use more of so I say fine to stock up on that stuff.
