Let’s talk cribs

I did a search but didn't see a thread on cribs...wondering who has gotten theirs yet?  I'm very stumped as to which crib to buy.  My mom was originally going to buy the crib but then my MIL wanted to...then they said they were going in on it together but my mom text me the other day and said my MIL said her and my DH's sister were going to buy it.  We basically had to tell them both not to buy the crib.  I don't understand why the crib is such a huge ordeal...and so sick of the drama.  Anyway, now I am buying the crib myself but have no idea where to start.  I basically want a great budget crib under $500.  Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

I got the Childcraft London from buy buy baby. It's a 3 in 1, it's less than $200 (using a bed bath and beyond 20% off), and it's just a basic crib. I had a piece come in with a missing chunk of wood. I called customer service and they were fantastic!

We bought the Graco Stanton crib from Walmart. It was around $200 for the crib and the mattress.

    ETA: It's also a 4-1.
  • Good idea on buying the crib yourself. It is funny how up in arms people can get over that stuff. We had to talk with each set of parents about how much they wanted to spend (a little awkward!) And then we picked out which items they each bought. I hate to micro-manage but it just seemed easier for everyone. And it avoided the issue from our wedding when my relatives bought the gift off the registry that my mom had her heart set on buying us!
I found crib research exhausting! Looking at the recommended lists just gets overwhelming and is often filled with ones that don't fit the look you might want. My suggestion is to narrow down which style you like them search for the ones in your price range and read the customer reviews. And don't get too caught up in reviews that mention damage when shipping. While some wood may be softer and scratches easier....anything oversized that is shipped is susceptible to scratches. Pay attention to safety issues and having the features you want!
  • Oh, and we bought the Simmons Slumbertime Augusta crib from Target. Also bought the 7 drawer dresser with changing table top.
  • I got a tip from my cousin that Ikea cribs are awesome for the vertically challenged! We checked them out, compared to a lot of others, and bought two Sundvik cribs for our upcoming twins.  I love that they are 3 in 1's, are a low enough height to easily reach the lower mattress level, and were crazy inexpensive compared to a lot else out there.  We still have to get the mattresses, but even with those the cost for each set will be less than $200, and needed two of so much I'm appreciating the cost savings anywhere we can find it!

    Good luck!
  • We haven't gotten the crib yet. We've decided to stay in our one bedroom apartment for a little while longer and since we're low on space we've decided a mini crib is the best idea. Any of you have suggestions for one?

  • We got the Babyletto Hudson (which is a $350 version of the $800 Oeuf Sparrow crib)...it's modern but more affordable than a lot of the modern syle cribs out there. My mom is buying it for us, but if she hadn't we would have picked the $99 crib from IKEA.

Everything I've read says cribs are all subject to the same safety standards so honestly you can get the cheapest one if you want. We got the Delta Sutton from Target, around $160 and it's one of the convertible ones.
  • We got the TriBeCa crib (I can't remember the brand name off the top of my head) at Babies R Us. I love it.

Babyletto Hudson here too! Overstock has coupons emailed over, and I used a 12% off so paid only $333 which I was happy about.

Storkcraft Mission Ridge 3-1 convertible crib at Kohls was $119. Then I got Kohls cash and put it towards the bedding.

  • We got the Fisher Price Riley Island crib. It is real wood and a nice, clean design for about $250. It also comes with a cute, little medallion that attaches to the bottom rail that you can send away and have inscribed with the baby's name.

We got this one, its a Bertini Pembrooke 4-in-1 from babies r us. It was a little more expensive but we got it for 15% off plus another $50 off because of coupons. We found it real hard to find something in a wood that we liked that was also in a style that we liked, so we just spent the extra money. It retails for $600 but we ended up getting it for $460. Its real easy to take apart and put together and looks and feels incredibly sturdy. Dont think it'd work out for a shorter mommy though, I can reach into it just fine but people here tend to tell me I'm tall.

Dont have a picture of it in our nursery quite yet because Im ashamed of how unfinished it still looks, woops!

  • Ohhhhh boy, the crib drama!  My mom said from the beginning she wanted to get us the crib so as soon as we picked one out, she purchased it.  Then, recently, my MIL kept badgering me about taking me to "her" furniture store to get "real wood furniture" and I had to tell her several times that the crib was already purchased.  She doesn't really know how to take no for an answer and kept badgering me and then had to the nerve to call my husband and say she RESEARCHED the crib my MOTHER bought and that it's made in China/they use dangerous chemicals/the company had recalls in the past two years blah blah blah.  Long story short I had a huge meltdown and hopefully now she backs off.

So after that ramble, here's our crib!  It is the Delta Chalet 4 in 1 in white/chocolate from BRU.  And don't worry, the recalls in the past two years were for DROP DOWN cribs which, hi, they don't even make anymore.  SHEESH.

  • We bought our crib from Burlington, less than $200
  • We got the Stork Craft Venetian convertible from Amazon. It was $177 on sale, now $197. Free shipping. I LOVE IT! It's nice quality and heavy. I've had many compliments on it and everyone thinks we paid over $500 for it. Good luck in your search!

Also just want to mention something funny - both my grandmother and FIL asked why the side of our crib doesn't drop down, and since it doesn't, how the heck you adjust it as the baby gets older. Had to explain they don't make them that way anymore! Thought it was hilarious.
  • I got the Childcraft London from buy buy baby. It's a 3 in 1, it's less than $200 (using a bed bath and beyond 20% off), and it's just a basic crib. I had a piece come in with a missing chunk of wood. I called customer service and they were fantastic!

We also went with the Child Craft London. It's a very simple design for a good deal. Both my husband and I signed up for the 20% off coupon, I used mine on the car seat/ stroller combo and he used his on the crib which brought it right down to the $200 mark (we are in Canada, it seems everything cost more here!) we are very happy with how it looks, it feels sturdy and I feel like we didn't overpay. We hit up Walmart for the mattress, I couldn't bring myself to pay the same for a mattress from buy buy baby as we did for the crib.

  • I got this crib from BRU. I liked that all the corners are rounded and it is pretty modern looking and short. It was under $300.
  • I bought the Storkcraft Mission Ridge crib from wayfair. Just received it this weekend. It is a convertible crib and was on sale for $109.99 with a free bedding set.
  • We also got the Sundvik crib from Ikea. $129. It fits really well in a small nursery and was surprisingly easy to put together. Quite possibly the only piece of Ikea furniture that didn't make us cuss like sailors.
  • My mom got me a dark gray Graco crib from Target for $299 (I think!!) It's beautiful and was very easy to put together. I've had it since about 15/16 weeks because my mom got VERY excited about ordering for her newest grandson ;)

OMG @Rikki_5 we had the exact same thing happen. My mom has said from the get go she was buying it then out of no where my MIL said she was going to buy it and got my mom all upset. My husband eventually got so mad he said neither one of them are buying it. So annoying.
  • So after deliberating and agonizing over it we went with the Sorelle Verona panel crib from BRU. I have to say, I absolutely love it. The crib feels solid, the French white color is so subtle and pleasing to the eye and its not too high. I'm 5'3 and I had such a hard time placing anything in other cribs. (i was the weirdo carrying around a baby sized stuffed animal practicing putting it in and out of the crib) This crib has a subtle dip in the front panel that gives me just enough room to lean over and place baby in and out which I adore. I think, after coupons and discounts we paid just under 400 for the crib and it was so worth it to me.
  • We are going with a mini crib since this LO will be sharing a room with us for the first year. We ordered the Divinci Emily mini crib in Espresso from Kohls ($149) and then used the Kohls cash to buy the mattress.

Is anyone here going without a crib for the time being? We are considering using something along the lines of a Pack n Play initially and then once we move out of our current tiny house next spring, putting together a more proper nursery. Has anyone gone a similar route with past babies?

Edit to add: I'm also intrigued by a "mini crib" like the one the previous poster mentioned - we might be able to fit something like that in our house. We just don't have room for a full setup at the moment unfortunately, we aren't going to have a designated nursery.

I'm using my pack and play with the bassinet/sleeper attachment for the first few weeks!

If you like modern styles like Babyletto, check out Babymod from Walmart (online only). Same company as Babyletto and under $300! I got the Marley crib for $229. Set it up yesterday and LOVE.
