Teaching... When to tell the boss

Hi there,
I'm a teacher and I'm wondering when is a good time to tell your principal that you are pregnant? I am fairly new to teaching and a first time time mom... So when is the time to tell? Is it safe to assume that this will not effect whether or not I have a job?

Re: Teaching... When to tell the boss

  • Do you teach for a public school. I don't really think it could be unsafe. I told my principal at the end of last year, at about 8 weeks.... Only because another special edu teacher will be out on maternity aug- November and I'll be out jan-match. So I figured maybe they could keep the sub. Where do you teach?

  • I am due in nov, ftm as well. I told my principal late in 1st tri/early 2nd. A- I have known him many years and B- our superintendent was coming to meet with me about my options & I didn't want him to hear from her instead of me. Whatever leave you take, fmla or maternity, see what your district says. Ours will keep A position for you, though depending on when you come back, it may not be the exact same (ie if you take all next school year off and you taught grade 3, coming back in the fall you might be placed in grade 1,but you Will have a job to come back to). This is, of course, in a public school. I can't speak to private.
  • Ps if you are in a public school, you can look at contract/with administration to talk options but your PSEA rep can tell you too!
