2nd Trimester

Has anyone had a gender scan at 17 weeks?

my husband works away and won't be home for the 20 week growth scan. We hoped to find out the gender then but rather than me have to tell him on the phone we decided to book a private gender scan at 17 weeks. This is the longest we could wait before he has to go back. Does anyone have any stories about how accurate their scan was at around this time? Please only comment if you've had this done as I'm aware it's not 100% and could be wrong x

Re: Has anyone had a gender scan at 17 weeks?

  • I paid out of pocket for a gender revel at 15weeks bc my husband is in the navy and would not be here for our 20 week scan. It said we were having a girl, I'm 24weeks now and it is 100% a baby girl lol

  • I had one at 18w2d because they won't tell us here during our anatomy scans. And he's 100% a boy.
  • I found out with my second that she was a girl at 15 weeks and with my third (girl) at 17 weeks. 100% accurate
  • I had a private scan at 16w3d and was told she was a little girl, confirmed at my 20 weeks anatomy scan she was a perfect healthy little girl xx
  • I found out at 16 w I'm having a girl.

I did an elective gender scan at 16 weeks and found out it was a girl! 17 weeks should be just fine!

  • No personal experience but I know my OB that I used for my last pregnancy started doing the anatomy scans 17-22 weeks.
  • I was given a gender announcement scan as a gift. I went at 15 weeks and was told girl. At my anatomy scan at 204d, she was still a girl.
  • My OB said they wouldn't do one until 19 weeks.  I go in next Monday for a routine visit and blood draw.  I wonder if I asked them to get me in before I start back for the school year, a week earlier than the 19 weeks they'd go for that. =P I just want to see my LO on the screen again.  Not even for the anatomy scan, just so I can hear the heartbeat and to see how much he/she has grown. Aside from that, I have heard anywhere between 17-21 weeks is usually when many find out, so I would say it's common.
  • My anatomy scan was at 17w4d - they try to do them close to 18w when you are high risk/ama.  It was obvious that baby was a boy, but they also were just confirming the MaterniT21 results.

I would not go to a non-healthcare professional prior to the anatomy scan - if there is something wrong, they can't offer any medical care or knowledge.  If you really want hubby to find out the sex at the same time as you, ask them to write it down and seal it in an envelope for you to save until he comes home.
  • If my husband couldn't be there I'd wait. I assume the anatomy scan is done at 20 weeks because of the developmental stage of the baby and all its vital organs, so 17 weeks may work to see the genitals but not the important, potentially scary things they can find at 20+ weeks.

Here we have a place that does sex scans, they won't tell us during our anatomy scans, or through bloodwork.
If they find something wrong with the baby, they won't tell us during the scan, or afterwards. They will send all the scan images and information to our pregnancy doctor. During our anatomy scan the tech won't tell us anything either, won't give us the measurements or discuss anything wrong with baby, that also gets forwarded to the doctor.
  • I had my A/S at 16 weeks and 5 days, and before that during my NT scan at about exactly 12 weeks I was also given information about the sex of my LO. Both times I got the same answer.  But it also depends on your LO. Whether or not they are active in the womb, open their legs and what not. Hopefully you will have a great A/S and the baby will show to be healthy and the reveal of it's sex will be icing on the cake for you. Have a Happy and Healthy pregnancy and I wish you a happy healthy baby.

  • I had my first ultrasound at 17 wks and we saw the gender right away. They say you can tell at 16 wks. Good luck :)
  • I'll also add, it's an ANATOMY scan. And finding out the SEX of your baby is just an added bonus, not the priority of the scan.
I'm all for promoting the fact that the ~20 week scan is for Anatomy, but OP clearly stated she wants to book an elective sex scan before her "growth scan" (aka anatomy scan) since her husband can't make it to the anatomy scan.  That would indicate she definitely knows the difference between the two.

No advice to give on gender/sex scans, we didn't find out the sex at all, but I think it's a nice idea since your husband won't be able to be there.  And you can get confirmation at the 20 week scan if baby is cooperating.  I wouldn't go crazy with purchases just in case, but i think 17 weeks is relatively accurate as far as these things go.
  • I'm just going to point out that even though gender and sex are two different things, I've seen several elective scan places call it the "gender scan". I believe in one of those videos on the bump app the lady called it that too. That's probably doesn't help the anyone that the professionals don't use the correct terms either. I'm just putting that out there... and NO I am NOT agreeing that it is ok. I'm just sharing an observation I've made.

  • Due to my mother's declining health, my husband and I asked my obgyn to do an ultrasound at 16 weeks. He happily did it and we are having a precious baby boy. Just had my anatomy scan a week ago and he still looks as healthy as ever and is, thankfully, still a boy. Good luck with your ultrasound. :)
  • What they should really call it is an elective genital anatomy scan (or find another, better word for it), but the unfortunate fact is that so many ultrasound places and doctors hesitate at using the word "sex" in regards to a baby. Just like "Sex Reveal Party" just doesn't quite seem to refer to the same thing. Problems with a puritanical society....

Also, it's pretty nitpicky to insist on pointing out I used the word "gender" once when I used the correct term three times. Sorry I didn't put it in quotes.
  • Me and my parter did a private scan at 16 weeks 5 days and she said she was 99% sure it was a girl. I go for my 20 week anatomy scan next week so obviously we'll know for sure. ( I'll actually be 21 weeks). I'm still freaked out though!!! We've already bought pink stuff and his parents have went nuts with baby girl stuff. Lol. I'm gonna attach my ultrasound picture and see what all the other moms have to say! Cause I've been worried too!
  • I had a scan at 15 weeks and they said a boy. I had the harmony test that confirmed boy.

They can tell you the sex of your baby now according to the blood work at your 12 week visit. Not all offices do this test but you can find out if yours does. It's apparently more accurate than the scan. I found out at 13 weeks.
  • My mom was in town for my wedding and we decided to do a gender reveal party/scan through a local private place.
I was 16w4d and there was NO doubt in anyone's mind that he is 100% a boy!!!
Will have my 20w anatomy scan in about 2 weeks, I'm betting he is still a boy
  • Ours was at 18 weeks and the technician could clearly "see" she was a girl.
