2nd Trimester

To be or not to be

I have this situation...

In March I had reason to believe I had conceived. After a couple of months of issues with food, feeling nauseous, incredible aches in my abdomen and getting a great amount of testing done - I was unceremoniously told that I was testing negative and was not pregnant (my last test being done at 13-16 weeks)

Since then, I have ignored the incredible aches in my breasts and the dull cramping that has plagued my abdominal area. The nausea has (mostly) disappeared and I still feel incredibly tired.... But around what should have been the 20week mark (this last week) my breasts have been aching nearly to the point of pain and I have this heavy sensation in my abdomen, which still aches. I find that bending over to reach something below my knees makes me feel like there's lots of pressure on my organs, which make me feel ill and shortens my breath.

At this point I am unsure if what I'm feeling is real or imagine (though I worked really hard to convince myself I wasn't pregnant after my negative results). I partly want to take another pregnancy test, but don't want to bring my hopes to a screeching halt again.

Any advice....?

  • I agree negative is negative, at that point it would have shown up. If you're looking for someone to prompt you that you might be and the test was wrong, you're not going to receive that advice here. I second that something may be up with your body and to check it out. I'm sorry and I feel for you, we TTC for years and I went through a couple spouts like this where I was 110% SURE that I was pregnant only to realize I was tricking myself.
  • In 2008, I stopped having my period from August until January 2009. During that time, I got severely bloated, had aching breasts, nausea, elevated bbt, a whole host of pregnancy symptoms. You could not convince me I wasn't pregnant, despite constant negative hpt. It turns out I had bilateral ovarian cysts that were disrupting my normal cycles and causing the hormonal changes. Please see your doctor and get to the bottom of this. You can drive yourself mad otherwise. I know I did.
    Good luck to you!

  • All of your symptoms are not exclusive to pregnancy. Call your doctor and figure out what is going on.
  • If you were 20 weeks, you'd have a baby bump. You would probably even be able to feel movement. I had both at 20 weeks.

If your doctor has run tests that said not pregnant, you're not pregnant. I'd recommend getting a full lab done to look at thyroid issues or other things to explain what you're feeling.

  • The medical diagnosis for this if you are, in fact, not pregnant (but truly believe you are), is pseudocyesis. Though extremely rare it happens and during my 5 year employment stint in a hospital ER say one true case of this. Going to your doctor and having tests run would be the only way to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

  • If you're having irregular periods your hormones are likely out of whack. High levels of hormones like progesterone can cause unpleasant symptoms such as you're describing. When I was a teenager I was very irregular and had similar symptoms to what you're describing. I would definitely go and see your doctor and have a blood test. Good luck x
