First prenatal appt. @ 5 weeks

edited July 2015 in March 2016 Moms
I had my initial ob visit today. I am 5 weeks yesterday according to my last menstrual cycle. I had a positive test at 4 weeks.
This is my 3rd pregnancy and that has been my previous experience. I have seen the same dr for all of my pregnancies and at the first visit not much occurs, just scheduling ultrasounds and blood work and return in 4 weeks. I'm usually given a due date and offered prenatal vitamins (I'm already on otc ones while ttc). Today however he had a small ultrasound type device and used it but was unable to see anything. He asked me how many tests I took (1) how late I was (8 days)symptoms (none) etc. He said it was a little early to see so he scheduled me to see him again in 2 weeks. Dh and I both got a weird vibe. That was it for the visit aside from a medical history. I went home and took another test. Still positive.
Thoughts? Anyone have this happen?
Eta: he asked if I had spotting or cramping (no) and to call immediately if I had any.

  • Unless you have a really good u/s machine and it's done transvaginally, there's not much to see at 5 weeks.  Most OBs schedule the first u/s 8+ weeks (if they do one during first tri at all).

I really wouldn't worry. I'm surprised they did the u/s so early.

  • Did they do a quant hcg test to get your betas? I went to my first OB appt at 4 weeks and my beta was 101. They were concerned because I had been cramping so sent me to an ultrasound just in case. They couldn't see anything but said that normally you can't see anything on an ultrasound until your beta hits 1500 and even then it's has to be transvaginally. I go back on Monday when I'll be 5w4d and they'll repeat beta and ultrasound. Don't worry!
  • No hcg tests.

Thanks ladies, I feel less worried now. :) just very uneasy leaving the doctor's today.
