High-Risk Pregnancy

Retroplacnetal Bleed

Hello this is my third pregnancy, Iam 20weeks pregnant today. Around 13weeks and 5 days I was bleeding they found a 2cm. Blood clot. I stopped bleeding for a month and than I had bleeding again went back to the hospital this time there was a 10cm. Hemorrhage they called it retroplancental bleeding where the clot is coming from behind the placenta. Also it's bkeeding out all around the uterus. Baby has been growing just fine and heartbeating 145bmp. It's a boy :) I still bleed but only at night and it's mostly brown. Doc tells me take it easy relax don't stress no heavy lifting plelvic rest. I have a appointment coming up for highrisk team. Praying everything gos well and that I get to see my little baby boy nice and healthy. My question is what have other people story's been and if something like this has happen to you or the same what was your outcome. My midwife says its just a wait and see kinda of thing nothing we can do to stop it. I am putting this in Gods hand.

Re: Retroplacnetal Bleed

  • I'm not sure this is much help as I don't have the same type of bleed, but I had a hemorrhage at 15w4d. I was initially told it was a 2.5cm SCH, then went to a MFM who found it was actually 12cm and all around my uterus much like yours. Thankfully only a portion is touching the placenta but that still has its risks.
From what I know, having a bleed around the placenta can potentially lead to issues or detachment of the placenta. I'm sure the doctors will be monitoring you regularly, but unfortunately there is not much they can do for bleeds other than take the "wait and see" approach. Just take it as easy as possible these next few weeks.
I'm currently 22w and although my hematoma is still there and the same size it hasn't bled in over 6 weeks other than old brown blood, similar to yours, and my baby is doing absolutely fine. My placenta has also been fine. I also have a short cervix so I am being monitored weekly for both until I hit 24 weeks. The 24 week mark is generally the "viability" mark where the fetus has a better survival rate outside of the womb in case something were to happen and you had to deliver early. Grim I know, but also keep in mind there have been babies born prior to 24 weeks were just fine. It's usually just a general marker.
Best of luck to you and seriously just take it easy! For many women the bleeds resolve themselves and disappear after several weeks. Just make sure you are seeing an excellent MFM/perinatologist.
Hope this helps a bit. Please keep us posted and I will be thinking of you!

  • Hi. I had heavy bleeding last Saturday and found out I had a SC hemorrhage. The dr at the ER gave my baby a 50/50 chance of survival but after seeing my ob she said I have a 5% chance of miscarrying. I just have to take it easy with some restrictions like not carrying anything over 15lbs. I'm also taking it day by day and I have my next apt in 4 weeks. I hope the best for you.
