Painful IUI

Last month when we did our first round with IUI my doctor struggled to get the catheter in my cervix and resulted with a really painful procedure, cramps worse than AF and I bled the remainder of the day. Now that I'm doing IUI again this weekend I can't help but remember the pain and am already starting to get discouraged. Has anyone else experienced this before and/or do you have any insight or advise. I have read some women have taken aspirin to help, but honestly I try to stay away from other medications as my body has seen way to much here lately. I do welcome any advise or insight though, thank you!

Re: Painful IUI

  • That has never happened to me before and I just had my 6th iui. There were times that caused more cramping than others but nothing major. I only spotted for a few of the iui's too just for a couple hours after. I would ask your dr what you can take to maybe help with the pain. I would ask about Aspirin because that has blood thinning properties so maybe that's not the best for you since you may be bleeding and that could potentially affect it. I would just try to have the attitude when you go into the dr next time that you know what this may be painful for a few minutes but I'm going to do whatever it takes to have a baby. Think of the end result and what you want and that may help push aside the fears. Good luck to you!
  • I hope your next IUI isn't so bad for you. Maybe now that he has done it for you once, he will know what to expect and how to make it easier? Fx. I have my first IUI, probably in August, and this post has me a little scared now!

  • Drove2u - I am waiting for my next cycle to start at the moment. Once that happens, my doctor is starting me on 75ml of Menopur. Once my follicles are good I'll use Ovidrel to trigger ovulation then we will have an IUI. This waiting process is driving me crazy. I don't ovulate so I am just waiting for AF so we can get this moving!

Good luck with your IUI. Do you know when it will be?

  • Thanks you too!! I finished clomid and have my appt this Monday. I think they will tell me then when to take ovidril. So I'm expecting the IUI sometime after this weekend.
  • That happened to me on IUI #3. I had a different doctor than the first 2 and he said he had trouble getting through the cervix opening. It was extremely painful and I bled a lot afterwards. But, it didn't hurt at all for #4 and #5. So, it may be entirely different this next time for you. I certainly hope it is. I was really scared after that one to do it again. I even was surprised with the same doctor again for #5 and it made me have terrible blood pressure readings the minute I saw that he was covering for my regular doctor. But, it was completely different. It's never comfortable. However, after that painful third time, I feel prepared for the worst and always happy when it's short and sweet.
  • Thank you so much @AMT&THC your comment really helped me calm down a bit. Well I went in today for cd10 ultrasound reading and he wants us to trigger tonight and come in Monday morning for our second IUI! I'm excited and nervous, the one thing getting me through is knowing one day all this will pay off and I will hold my child in my arms that day! I was so excited when he counted out the eggs and read out measurements! Right side unfortunately had only 1 but measured at 19 and I had 4 he measured on the Left at 19,18,19, and 13... He said I was putting on a show on the left as there were 4-5 others unfortunately not mature enough though!

  • I'm so sorry to alarm some of you who may be going in for your first IUI. My doctor did say it's rare and I have also been told I'm a rare/difficult case.... I hope you won't have to go through this and chances are you wont. Thank you so much for the support and kind words and good luck and fingers crossed for everyone of you that it happens for y'all soon!

  • Well I went in this morning for my 2nd IUI and am glad to say it didn't feel like last months procedure! I just had a lot of pressure and cramping during the procedure this time although the RE did say he still had a tough time getting the catheter in. Oh well it is worth it, I really hope this is it!

  • @Cbowden12, I am watching The Bachelorette from last night and eating string cheese. I am telling myself it's pregnancy cravings....bahahaha! It isn't really helping though. I am still obsessing. I am going paddleboarding this afternoon and then out to dinner so that will help, I hope :-) Let's both try to stay as sane as we can. Fingers crossed!!!
  • Omg. Paddle boarding? I love it!! I have not seen yesterday's bachelorette but I have it dvr'ed and hope to watch it soon!!
  • I won't tell you what happened on bachelorette. I am moving on to After the Rose here in a minute and a nectarine instead of string cheese. I hope the paddle boarding tires me out so I really sleep good tonight! I'll be too tired to worry. That's the plan at least.
  • Well I know who wins. There was that snapchat that went out. :-) but still I want to watch it and the after the final rose. Bachelor in paradise starts next week too.
  • I missed the snap chat and stayed away from the news this morning in an effort to surprise myself. It worked! I am looking forward to Bachelor in Paradise. See, I am already making post-testing plans...I am so proud of myself. haha!
  • Since my IUI is tomorrow I think after it I will be sitting on the couch watching it. :-)
  • Excellent idea. That is definitely something to look forward to! :):)
