HUD rant

So I actually have been checking into this program only to realize I would rather be scraping by than to use their system that pretty much sets people up to be failures. I'm so irate its ridiculous. I found a very nice house for almost 700$ a month and to my surprise he will accept HUD as long as it covers his amount... The catch is, I highly doubt it will cover that amount. So I ask, well could I just pay the remaining part of the rent that it doesn't cover?
His response: dealing with HUD in the past it's illegal for people w a voucher to pay remainder cost.
As long as I can get them to accept me paying on it or it in that price range we are good. So I call to nose around, it actually IS illegal for people to pay on their rent. How is that so? I work full time I just need a little cushion here to help me pay for a place until I get more stable and vehicle paid off, why can't I do what I want and help with the bills when I make my own money?
The people at HUD says: you'll have to see if the renter will lower his price to meet the voucher or you'll have to find one in that price range.
Okay first, I'm not dogging on all HUD places majority around here are filthy and are crawling with bad people. (Because I mean they can afford to do bad things since HUD requires you to pretty much be lazy and not have any responsibilities so you can do whatever the he** you want with your paychecks)
Second, I don't want my daughter in a place like that she deserves better and I for sure don't want in a place like that.

So now you ladies know why this world sucks, they set ya up to be lazy and failures. It's sad that someone working full time can't get a decent place to rent because they aren't allowed to touch the bills. No wonder so many people are jobless on this program or worse doing whatever they want with their paychecks. I had NO idea it was illegal to do that, I thought HUD covers so much and you pay the rest. Their system is twisted and ridiculous. I will NOT be a part of this. I feel like my head is going to explode now that I know some facts about this. X(

Also, I'm not downing any women who use HUD I'm not aware of anyone's financial situations as you aren't aware of mine. I'm also not downing people if you live in HUD properties (I've actually found a couple decent ones but they're way too far from my job) the ones close to my area are filthy. I just posted this thread to show some people how this system ACTUALLY works.

  • Agree with PP. Maybe just go house/apartment shopping? You would be surprised. We have found houses ranging from $600-$1000 that are pretty nice. I know it all depends on where you live and the cost of living, but it wouldn't hurt to just shop around on your own. Good luck!
  • I understand that 100% but I'm sure there's others like me that can help so much with bills (no I couldn't do it all that's why I'd need their help but I am capable of helping some if need be), I think a lot of people on that program should have to help to a certain extent, also if someone feels financially comfortable to help in any way or pay a part than that shouldn't be illegal that should be between the tenant and the rental owners. (considering the renter said theres been others that have tried in the past to pay the remaining half on rent I'm sure there's a lot more out there in this situation that most realizes) also I'm sure there's many women who are in worse situations as I stated above. I know no ones financial situation as no one knows mine. But at the same token, there's plenty of people (I personally know) that get in this program and sees how much they take care of you so they decide to quit their jobs and rely completey on them when they're fully capable of working. That's why I think families that CAN help contribute should be required to at a certain amount (according to income and bills) so we won't have so many families just quitting their jobs and doing nothing. It just frustrates me that I'm one of those that can help to a certain extent but I'm not legally allowed to? I don't understand why that laws set in place like it is. I think there should be exceptions to the rule. That's all. And I'm sure MOST people aren't aware that's how HUD actually works. I know a lot of people in my family wasn't aware of this and they're frazzled by it too.

That's what I went through to find this info out they're all in the same building/program together in my jurisdiction. I think it's called section 8 subsidized housing for blah blah counties which practically means HUD. When I had applied I had to give them my bank routing number and bank statements and pay stubs.... So they definitely did it off my income, it's just law if you are eligible for the voucher you're legally NOT allowed to help in any way with the bills.

Hm weird def not like that in CT.
  • It's like that here and I had NO idea it was like that or I wouldn't of wasted my time with them. It def shouldn't be like that! I'm not sure why it is it's beyond me..... Back a few years ago HUD covered so much and you covered the rest... Now it's completely different. So I guess I'm off to hunt some more places down that will hopefully be in my range.

OP, many private landlords actually prefer section 8 tenants because of the guaranteed money, and the tenants also have requirements that make them easier tenants.
