I think it depends on the severity... I have anxiety, and I have been on prescriptions for it. When I got pregnant I went into counseling for my anxiety and learned how to control my attacks- although I know this isn't the case for everyone. If your OB thought it was severe enough for you to go to the emergency room, I would listen to your doctor.
I guess a good question would be how bad is your anxiety? If you are having panic attacks or something of the sort then yes maybe go to the ER. I usually advise all my clients to try therapy before going to medication unless the symptoms are severe. Care is usually covered by insurance and most jobs offer an EPA (employee assistance program) which covers 4-6 sessions free. If for some reason therapy isn't accessible you can also find support groups and information on relaxation techniques online. On YouTube search guided meditation or progressive muscle relaxation- these are usually first line of defense for anxiety in therapy. Research coping skills and find your own. More than anything focus on being safe if your thoughts become dangerous or you feel you are not safe seek assistance immediately. I hope this helps
I literally just had a panic attack. I am already on lexapro but can't take my emergency medicine and some days are a struggle. I have a check up tonight so I'm going to ask the doctor what I can do. Good luck to you and know you are not the only one struggling!
I have anxiety and panic attacks, but I have actually found some relief from them during my pregnancy. I feel that your Dr should have given you more advice than just saying "go to the ER." You already know they will say it's anxiety and send you home. I recommend some counseling sessions to help you learn to cope with your symptoms during pregnancy so you won't need to rely on your meds (I know that just THINKING about the fact that you can't pop a Xanax can bring on anxiety).
Also, try to plan out your days as much as possible so you don't have too many surprises that can cause more anxiety. Do things you like, watch movies you love, anything positive to take yourself out of your mind.
Do you know what your anxious about? I got anxiety attacks when I went to work so I was put on bed rest. Maybe speak with a mental health professional since your ob seems kinda jerky from that response.
My anxiety and depression are just starting to rear their ugly heads again. I have a history of both, so I saw the dr Friday. She gave me Zoloft and a few ativan for the attacks(as needed). She said the Zoloft is safe for breastfeeding too so I'll probably stay on it a while. I think they're also going to watch me a little closer to mitigate any post partum depression
Last pregnancy my ob sent me to a maternal mental health specialist. It was good to talk it out with an expert who recommended sleeping pills (I had complete insomnia) and a few changes at home.
Each situation is unique and I felt silly going to a phsychiatrist but your hormones can go whacky in pregnancy and your mental health is very important for a healthy baby.
If you are in an emergency situation go to the ER, it is nothing to be embarrassed about, you might even luck out and get a great Dr with good advice and a referral to a specialist?
