Tailbone pain v sciatica

Hi ladies,
I've been having a lot of tailbone pain recently, but it seems sort of associated with only my right hip. I remember this from my last pregnancy, however I thought it was on the other hip last time.

I don't remember having sciatic pain like it's usually described (shooting pain down the leg) but am wondering if maybe this is it? It's a shooting pain but just not down my leg.

Or if anyone else is experiencing something similar.

TIA!

Re: Tailbone pain v sciatica

  • Sciatica generally originates from the spine, from compression on the sciatic nerve. I primarily have it on the right, but since being pregnant I've felt it on the left too. It sometimes feels like a pain deep in your butt cheek, in your hip, not always with shooting pain. But it could also feel like pain closer to the center of your lower back.

  • I've had tailbone pain since before getting pregnant. The pain is right in the middle of the upper part of my butt cheeks. Lately I've had the sciatic pain too mostly when I go for a walk. That pain starts about the middle of my right butt cheek and shoots down my leg. All this talk about butt cheeks lol!
  • When you say it shoots down your leg, do you mean down to your calves too or just thighs? I am curious as I don't remember this from last time...
  • I'm also wondering if I should look into a chiropractor... Perhaps something is misaligned?
  • I also have tailbone pain, right in the middle of my butt cheeks at the top! Some times it gets so bad, I get sort of a muscle cramping feeling! It's awful!

I have been getting this too! But mine is like literally in between my ass cheeks - it is really an interesting place especially when my husband volunteers to give me a massage! HAHA
  • I've had it on the right side, many times when I get up.  It has gone away though in the past week.

  • @leeleepi seriously, does message help?
  • I went to my chiro today for a nearly identical issue, it's normal for joints to stretch out at different paces due to relaxin. Is Chiro covered by your insurance? Some offer a network of complementary care at a fairly inexpensive copay. I haven't had a prenatal massage yet but was told by several moms that a lot of massages won't get too deep around your lower back and abdomen but a Chiro who is experienced in prenatal care can do some adjustments and hopefully show some good stretches for home. Feel better!

For me, it shoots down to my thigh although I do think for some it can shoot all the way down to the calf.

it doesn't help for long term, but in the moment it feels oh so good!
  • Would Def do chiro. Life saver. Massage is good too.
  • I have that same tailbone pain. It's really bad some days. Almost as if there's a bad bruise there. I work in an office so I sit at a desk all day and then in the evenings I sit at a desk studying. I've been going to chiropractor but to me it just seems like temporary relief. I've noticed swimming helps big time.
Occasionally I get sciatic pain in my left butt cheek but it doesn't travel down. It'll just be a sharp pain in my butt especially when walking.
