Urination After C-Section

I'm a FTM and had a scheduled csection yesterday which went well overall. They removed my catheter around 11:30 last night and said I should be able to pee within a few hours, but I haven't been able to yet, even though I feel like I need to. For other csectioners, how long after the catheter was removed were you able to pee on your own?

Re: Urination After C-Section

  • About 24 hours for partial feeling but several weeks for full feeling. My catheter was in a really long time though. See also "numb bladder" thread part way down c sec 1st pg. good luck!

  • I am the original poster of "numb bladder" 2 weeks and 2 days later I'm starting to feel the sensation to pee again. I had to time going to the bathroom. About once and hour I would make myself go to ensure that if wasn't holding too much urine because apparently that can cause more problems.
My catheter was in for the "usual 24 hours"
  • I wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom on my own until they had helped me to the bathroom 3 times and had good output for each of those, so I was able to within a day. They got me up and catheter out 12 hours after surgery. I don't remember feeling like I needed to go, but I still managed to. I made a point to get up and try to go every few hours after since I was drinking so much water to help with nursing.
  • I went nearly immediately on my own. Was it a bit painful? Yes, but afterwards I felt so much better.
  • I was able to pee right away, but that is because there was a kink in my catheter causing a backup, which gave me the feeling of having to pee even with the catheter in.
After that, the nurse told me to head for the bathroom to pee every 2 hours, whether I felt like I had to go or not.
  • I peed immediately after they removed my cathader. It took me a few minutes and wasn't a steady stream, even kinda burned/hurt a little bit. Each time after that it got easier, but the slight pain at the end didn't go away until about 2 weeks. My dr. said it was probably from the size of the cathader.
  • I always have a very hard time restarting my bladder after surgery. Thought it was just me. I have to have the room quiet and turn the shower or sink on to get things going again.
  • I urinated within a few minutes of my catheter being removed. I had the catheter removed about 14 hours after it was placed.  The first time was a bit painful, almost like a burning sensation.
  • My catheter was in a but less than 24 hours and I managed to pee right after it was removed. I'm now 2 weeks post csection and I still have some discomfort or burning sensation from time to time. I'm told it's normal (by dr) and have no sign of infections. I've noticed the discomfort is worse on days when I don't intake as much liquid as I should.

PS- my dad had a real hard time peeing again after his surgery catheter was removed. He had to be recathetered twice just so he could relieve his bladder. His doctor at the time explained the surgery anesthesia meds affect everyone differently and some take a long time to return to normal.

    Good luck!
