2nd Trimester

Running and baby growth - running in general

I've just been to see my midwife and feel slightly frustrated by the advice, so wanted to share and get other views.  I'm 14 weeks tomorrow and so far my pregnancy has been amazing.

Going into the second trimester, I have lots of energy and as a result I've started jogging again (I've been long distance running for the last 15 years  - I was training for my fifth marathon when I fell pregnant).  I didn't run at all in the first trimester just some walking-jogging.  Today, I let my midwife know that I'm aim to gentle jog 4-5 times a week (nothing intensive), 5-8 km maximum.

However, my midwife has strongly advised against this and has recommended 3 times a week, 30 minutes max - apparently there has been significant studies around running for longer periods than the recommended can affect the baby's growth.  Are there any second time mothers that have run the amount I'd like to run and had a normal sized baby?  Any runner mums who have been given similar recommendations?  Any runner mums that are running?

I will listen to my midwife's recommendation, as I wont do anything that will jeopardise my little lady's growth (mindful that I'm being a tad selfish, however jogging these last few days has made me feel so good), just wanted to put it out there to get other perspectives on this subject.

Appreciate your views

Re: Running and baby growth - running in general

  • My ob okayed me running my whole pregnancies every time. This is my 4th and I still run. My babies are all between 8.5 and 9.5 lbs. So I disagree with the small part. Just don't do more than your body is comfortable with. I had just completed a marathon when I found out I was pregnant with my 1st.

  • My friend ran a marathon at 20w, but she has always been a dedicated runner - didn't stop or decrease during 1st tri.

However, I am a big proponent of listen to your doctor. Perhaps your midwife is concerned that you aim to increase activity. My OB advised that "if you did it before, continue, do not increase".
  • The advice my ob-gyn gave during both pregnancies is if I was doing it before I was pregnant I could continue as long as I didn't push too hard or change the routine dramatically. With my first I ran and did pilates but this time I'm swimming bc i can't deal with the heat and I'm more achey than before. The key is listening to your body, taking care and making sure your dr knows what's up.
