C-sections

Repeat c-sec 2 years apart - Recovery?

DD1 was born in 1996 by emergency c-section after induction & 27 hours of labour.
DD2 was born in 2013 by c-section after my water broke 3.5 weeks early & 6 hours of labour.

I'm pregnant again and due on DD2's original due date - Dec. 27. I will probably be schedule for a c-section around Dec. 22/23 making it almost 2 years to the day of my 2nd c-section. Recovery from my last two were a breeze (knocking on all the wood). I had no complications, things were great. However, they were also 17 years and 5 days apart.

Will recovery be more difficult with this c-section being so close to my last one?

I had 2, first in Feb 2012, second in Nov 2014 , so 2yrs 9m apart. The first was a breeze, the second was even easier. I guess your body gets tougher and tougher and can deal better with everything on subsequent ones.

  • Mine were 22 months apart. I thought I recovered fairly easily from the first, but the second one was even easier/better.
  • This will be my second....if VBAC not possible.  @mhwood Sounds like you had a decent experience - any tips for second time around??  My first was awful, after 50+ hrs of labor it was an emergency/happened fast and I was totally wiped out from the days of no sleep.  So, recovery was brutal.  I'm scared to do VBAC and scared to do CS - lol!  All my friends who had to do repeat CS said the second was really easy compared to the first.
  • For me, my second was a bit harder to recover from - they were 1 year & 50 weeks apart :)  However, with my first, I didn't have any stitches or staples - Dr. closed me up another way & used tape.  With my second I had staples.  Once they were removed though, I felt so much better & felt like I could move around more freely.  My second was still a breeze to recover from, but not as easy as the first.
  • My second and third were my easiest to recover from. They were around 2 years apart.
  • I've had 3 (2011, 2012, 2014) and the physical recovery has gotten easier each time. I found that the more medication I used, the harder my recovery was. When I don't feel any discomfort, I tend to push myself beyond my limits and the whole thing takes longer to heal. I had the most success medicating to a tolerable discomfort and walking as much as my body would allow (helped by my last 2 being in the NICU in a different wing of the hospital).

You had your first cesarean in 1996 when the common procedure was to cut the abdominal muscles (vice stretching them which is the current procedure). If you recovered easily from that I can't imagine you having a hard time with anything now! Good on you and good luck.
