Placenta previa?

so last night is slipped and fell and started getting back pain and cramps..:no blood though. I went to the ER to get checked out...n they said I have marginal placenta previa. I have to wait till Monday to see my OB. The ER doc didn't seem to know much. My on call doc for my ob said bed rest and no activity or sex. I'm freaking out. Googling did not help. I'm 15 weeks 4 days. Has anyone else gone through this? The cramping feels like period cramps and I'm scared I'm going to start bleeding! Advice plzzzz!

Re: Placenta previa?

  • I worked with someone who had placenta previa, she had to be out from work from the middle of her pregnancy until after her maternity leave (we have a very physically demanding job, not sure if she worked a desk job she'd have to be out.) Either way, she delivered him via c-section and loves him to bits. If you can relax, then try to do so. I think placenta previa is just the way the placenta grows, not necessarily related to a slip that you had. Also, are you drinking enough water? If I don't drink enough water I start to cramp up and it freaks me out until I realize why.

  • I'm not a big drinker...but today I've been sipping a Trenta Starbucks refresher and I'm still cramping. Ty for the advice. I can't lose this baby. Im 34...I just had a miscarriage in Jan.
  • I'm so sorry that you've had a loss. Maybe take someTylenol if it's okay with your doc (I think most places have a 24 hour hotline) and just try to rest. Maybe rent a movie and order in your favorite food. Any worrying that you do is just going to clog up your brain. Good luck and try to enjoy your weekend xoxo

I'm sorry you are having this issue, and hope you can get some peace of mind. I don't have any personal experience with this, but I read up on everything that could go wrong and asked my midwife about everything so I'd know what to do with different stuff, and she said many, if not most placenta previa resolve later in the pregnancy, especially if they are not complete. Not necessarily that the placenta moves, but that as the uterus grows the placenta goes with it and the cervix stays put. And as I understand it the previous responder was right, this was there all along, just how the baby implanted and not to do with the fall. I hope you get to speak with so eone at your ob and start to feel better!
  • I had one withy first pregnancy. It has nothing to do with the fall. You placenta just attached low and is marginally covering your cervix. It shouldn't require bed rest but does require pelvic rest until it resolved. I had a partial prévia, discovered at 12 weeks and lasted until 24 weeks. I never bled out and as my uterus grew, pulled the placenta with it and cleared my cervix. I delivered vaginally at 41 weeks. Good luck and relax as your OB will explain your specific case but don't stress, happens all the time.

Like several of the previous posters, I too had a partial placenta previa early in my first pregnancy (detected at an ultrasound around 12 weeks). It resolved itself by my 20 week ultrasound. I was put on pelvic rest (no sex), but that was all. I agree - I think many cases (especially partial ones) resolve themselves as the uterus grows and moves everything up. I wouldn't worry much right now...give it some time and see what happens. Good luck!
  • Thank you so much for all the responses. I wonder what the cramping is from then?
  • I am 15 weeks one day, and I just left the doctors office. My subchorionic hematoma is gone! But I am still full previa. The placenta has moved over a little.
I'm about to start googling the odds on whether or not it's going to move up completely. I'd really like to deliver naturally. And have sex, that'd be swell too. After all, that's how I got in this situation.
  • Ugh I know exactly what you're going through! I went through the same thing with my first pregnancy. I forgot when I found out I was a high risk pregnancy due to placenta previa, but I had no limitations right away. At about 32 weeks into my pregnancy I noticed some bleeding and immediately called and was admitted into the hospital on bed rest until it was time to have the baby. I began passing blood clots and was watched very carefully, all in all, as horrible as bed rest was, it was a blessing in disguise because my daughter stayed healthy and happy throughout it all! Stay positive, listen to your doca, know your body and smile because you're going to get through this. Xo
  • I actually went to see my dr yesterday because I had some bleeding and they said my placenta is "low lying". Not covering the cervix but it's close. So he said that's why I was bleeding. He said no sex until my anatomy scan to make sure that it was fixing itself, but he didn't say bed rest. But I've been laying down since then for the most part anyways. He said it almost always fixes itself, and not to worry about it :)

Refreshers are highly caffeinated. Please stop drinking them if you're trying to hydrate!
