Anyone taking lovenox Shots?

i was diagnosed with two copies of the mthfr gene mutation and my dr put me on lovenox once a day. Did my first shot yesterday and it definitely burns after its injected. Anyone have any experience with this ? Does it get better? I'm currently 10 weeks and have to continue throughout my whole pregnancy. I've been ttc for four years , had 6 iuis, and 2 ivfs with one loss so I will do anything to keep this baby but just wanted some support and advice from my fellow mommas. ☺️

I take heparin injections 2x daily, I have has 4 late losses and have 1 copy of mthfr gene, I have a thrombophilia, they are not sure exactly which or what. Nonetheless, I have to take them throughout my pregnancy to keep myself preggo. It worked great in my previous pregnancy, I had a healthy huge 9lb10oz 23in baby boy! It does get better and you will get used to it. Unfortunately, you will get these heinous bruises on your tummy, and IMHO it makes morning sickness worse! Also, you get cold easier. Good luck to you and a HH 9 mos! :D

  • Thank you for your reply ! I know it will all be worth it.
  • It will. Just try to relax and focus on the positive. Easier said then done, I know! But it will certainly be worth all the struggles in the end. I'm here if you need me :)
  • I have the mthfr gene mutation but never had to get shots for either of my pregnancies.  My mom and older sister have Factor V but I don't.  I don't know if that is why.  I've had two c-sections they just put compression stockings on my legs for the surgery.  Not sure what my doctor will say this time since I'm older.

I'm on lovenox because I had multiple blood clots just over a year ago. They ruled it ad a side effect of my birth control, which they took me off of. I had to give myself shots twice a day for 2 weeks. I had to meet with my ob before my first prenatal appointment bc she wanted me to get started on lovenox right away. Thankfully, these are a lower dose and a smaller needle. I've had a ton less bruising so far. It's a pain, but if I can protect my baby, I'm going to do it. Work on your technique. It stings more when I stick myself incorrectly or flinch. Sometimes I barely feel it, other times it burns. Good luck! I'm here if you want to talk.

I am. Took them through my last pregnancy too. Sometimes it's worse than others. I find it's better if you make sure to go wide on the love handles and make sure you're giving a good squeeze while you inject. After a while, you get used to it.

  • I am 11 weeks and my ob and hematologist both want me on Lovenux the entire pregnancy. I have only had 1 clot (after being on birth control for 12 years straight) but I do also have Protien C deficiency. I don't want to do the shots again...ever.
  • I start shots the first week of August cause of factor v. I asked on the high risk board for tips and was told that icing the area can help before if the needle bothers you, and that after it helps take the stinging away. I was also told to pinch as much skin as possible. Sounds like pretty sound advice. Good luck!
  • I had to do Lovenox injections with my last pregnancy because I had a blood clot but am still unsure if I'll have to do it again this time. My OB is leaving it up to the perinatologist who I will see in a week or two. I am praying that I don't have to but I have accepted that it's a possibility. When they told me last time that I had to inject myself twice a day I really didn't know how I'd do it. I hate needles and couldn't imagine sticking myself. But somehow I got used to it and it became second nature after a while. I second what pp said about applying ice first. I don't know if you're doing that already but it helps a lot.

I've been on Lovenox since week 6 (now, week 9). I'm used to it. It's just hard to find new spots on my right side for some reason, because I bruise very easily there. It doesn't really hurt that much anymore. I definitely squeeze for at least like 30 seconds afterwards, and sometimes rub around the area (not directly on it.) Good luck!

  • I am glad this thread is here! I have Protein S Deficiency and just met with the perinatologist. She said that because I haven't had a history of blood clots that I would be fine taking just a baby aspirin while pregnant. However, after delivery she told me I will need to be on Lovenox for 6 weeks. Good luck to all of you mama that have to take it now and thank you for the advice, I will remember the ice part!
  • FINALLY!! I started a thread on this awhile ago and no one responded :(. I thought I was the only one one here. I have MTHFR and Prothrombin Gene Variant, had a clot about 12 years ago and was on Coumadin ever since. Once my husband and I started trying to conceive, my hematologist switched me to Lovenox since Coumadin can cause birth defects. I've been on it for 2.5 years now, twice a day, and will obviously be on it until after baby's born. I noticed it hurts less when I'm sitting and administer the shot. Also try to rotate your sites, less bruising that way!
  • Hi all. Had to change my account bc I didn't realize my full name was showing. I am the one who started the thread. Thank you for all of your replies. I have been doing the shots for a few days now and no bruising ! I'm shocked but pleased. It's starting to become more routine now. They still hurt a bit but I know it's worth it. Glad we are all in this together
  • I also have both types of MTHFR, finally confirmed this after 3 miscarriages. Had a successful pregnancy with my DD by starting Lovenox while trying to get pregnant due to how early I would miscarry. Doing the same routine or "baby cocktail" this time around! Stomach bruised badly in the beginning but seems to be getting better. I alternate between left & right side & pinch while injecting. You get use to it, but it always kind of stinks! :/ good luck!!

  • I had a blood clot that was the entire length of my left leg 3 years ago. I don't have any clotting conditions, it was just a fluke post op complication to my spinal fusion surgery that went undiagnosed by the rehab hospital I was in. It required 2 surgeries, 2 permanent metal implants and almost led to a full amputation. Now during pregnancy, I have to be on twice daily lovenox injections just to be safe. I hate it, but I love this baby. They hurt me so bad this time for some reason, but I've been spraying the site with cold aerosol spray before injecting and it helps a lot.
