Weird name rules.

Luckily we already have a name picked out but we did have some funny rules as far as coming up with one. For starters, no names of anyone that we used to date or hook up with. The really big one for us though was no K's in the name, period. 

My DH has quite the terrible history with girls named Kristy, Kristina, Krystal, Krista, and so forth so he decided that K's are flat out banned, and hard C's for good measure. In his opinion girls that start with K, especially along the lines of the whole Kris... etc etc are flat out crazy lol. (His words, not mine, and he does have good reason for not liking them even if it's totally coincidence. To compound the issue his best friend has the same problem with Kristy's lol so he is just convinced, which is a bummer since I always loved Christa from Ferngully but oh well.) 

Anyway, to get back to the point, do you have any funny name rules, and if so, why?

Our last name is Gann so no G names and no names the same as any cousins and no names of kids we know are brats. My DH coaches basketball so has had lots of boys over the past 11 years so he has aversions to certain names of boys that caused him trouble.

My husband goes by his middle name (and always has) since he was named first middle last after his dad. This created confusion throughout schooling and some headaches with official documents etc. Because of how annoying/ frustrating it has been for him, the kid's first name will be what we want to call him. I realize that naming a kid what you will call him/her is pretty standard but for us, it is a watershed issue :-)

Definitely no exes... But these goes without saying. We can't have any "P"s in the name since our last name had two of them - unless of course we want to start a new tongue twister. This is kind of a bummer though because I adore the name Penelope.

But we have decided to name after one of my grandparents using their first initial. So we have a self-imposed "rule" of choosing an "M" or "S" name. I have to say it's been very helpful in narrowing down the field, and even so we have quite a few options we both like.

Edited to add: it's important for me to have a name that's easy to spell and pronounce correctly as I have a name that has multiple spellings/pronunciations and I'm always correcting people. It's annoying. It's one reason I ruled our my husband's suggestion of Madeline/Madeleine/Madelynn etc...

My husband and I agreed on no names from cousins and no exes. Also names from people he's friends with that I don't like and vice versa. Also no "J" names.

We only have one...No Italian sounding names, which I usually love. We have nothing against them at all but our last name is Raglio and people constantly assume we're Italian even though DH has no Italian in his blood line what so ever. Other than that we had a pretty easy time picking a name.

Well, our last name is a commonly used name for "penis" so I certainly can't name a boy, Harry. Other than that, DH doesn't want the initials to be "BJ" either. So nothing sexual here.

We didn't have any weird name rules with DD, but I wanted to name her Emma. DH thought that sounded like a little kid's name and not a woman's name :-/ /:) so we compromised on Emily.

@Embuzz247 I have a similar problem with our last name.  So no to Richard (can be shortened to Dick), Jackson, Jack, Harry or Harrison.  I really like Jack, such a bummer.   Our last name is long so would like to have at least either the first or middle name be only one syllable.

The only rule we have is not to name our baby something and then call them something different. For example, naming the baby William and then planning on calling him Will. Then we'd just name him Will!

We have the rule with no naming after living relatives as a promise to my grandfather. No J names because there are so many in the family it's getting confusing. Our last name is incredibly easy to make so very many puns out of so trying to avoid that. We chose more uncommon names this time but tried to go with ones that are easy to pronounce by looking at it, as in it's pronounced just how it looks. My grandma always said not longer than five letters for first name to make it easier and a bunch of other rules she's given us.

The only rule DH had was that we don't absolutely shorten the first name to a nickname. So for example, Victoria can't be shortened to Vicky, Samantha can't be shortened to Sam or Sammy, etc.

My only rule was that the name can't be in the top 500 of the Social Security Name list. Which was VERY tough, but it worked well for DD's name. I didn't want her to be 1 of 10 in the class, but I also didn't want a yooneek name.

I have no clue what we're naming this kid.

Wait, some of you had to have actual conversations about ex's names being off limits???? Isn't that a given? 

I'm with other posters on the nickname thing. We don't want to name our child something knowing that we'll call them something different. I don't mind nicknames in general, but not "given" to them before the child is born.

My husband is a botanist and our last name is another word for flower so no floral names here. No exes names, no repeat of cousins or kids in the church ( this rules out a lot as I have a TON of cousins)

I share your husbands same dislike or those c and k names. Lol completely irrational but I've always hated those Kristen, Kristy, Christine, etc. No offense to anyone that has or likes those names, its just a weird thing I've always had. My husband and I didn't really have any weird rules that I can think of. Just none of the most popular ones from the past few years I guess. Haha but I just had to share because I feel the same way as your husband only mine is totally for no reason.

Same as above and for girls no name that ends in a -y or -a since our last name starts with an A. My biggest thing is it has to be a multi-generational/traditional name since I hate that anyone can guess my age by my name which i perceive as a professional barrier.

It's so funny so many people don't want nick names... I love nick names and am drawn towards ones that have flexiblility.

No Disney names. One of our family members (an adult) actually suggested Elsa. She was like "No, no, not like Frozen! It's just a really nice name!" Doesn't matter, all anyone will ever do is tell her that she was named after a Disney character. My ethnic side of the family suggested Aladdin... Shaking my head! NO, DISNEY NAMES!!!

My biggest rule has always been that I didn't want biblical names. But of course in the first trimester I had a couple dreams. Both times I woke up to a kid in my dream saying "my name is Isaiah, my name is Isaiah" repeatedly until I woke up! So I have to listen...My lo's name will be Isaiah. Now I just need a much less common/biblical middle name.

We aren't sure what we're having yet but if it's a boy he will have the same middle name as my husband (4th gen tradition). My husband uses his first and middle initials and goes by AJ so we've ruled out any B names for the same reason you did... no I will not name our kid BJ!

I don't mind "k" names, but for some reason, the letter K is overtly feminine to me. There is no logic to it and I cannot explain why, but I have felt that way for a long time. No offense at all to anyone with K named male family, friends, or children.

We didn't have a specific conversation about no exes but as names have come up, we've vetoed them my saying, "That was an ex's name." So I guess the rule is in place. I also vetoed the name of my ex's new son. I only have one ex (a very serious relationship way back when) and he has one son so for some reason I think it would be weird to name my son the same thing he named his son. Just can't do it.

Aside from that, we want to make sure the initials aren't odd. For example, one of the names we were considering if we had a girl would have had the initials of OMG. No thanks. Or anything that would make things like HOG, etc. 

The only other thing that was off limits for us was anything not spelled the correct or classic way (I was an English teacher so I just can't do youneek spelling) and our last name starts with Ger, so we tried to avoid J names so we didn't have the sing songy rhyming name.

My husband made the rule of no family names.. Yeah.. This is especially difficult seeing as how my side of the family has a strong tradition of using the names of our deceased loved ones and naming the first born son after baby's grandfather. We've stopped all name discussions at this point lol

@CMDD I generally feel the same way. Have you read the Freakonomics chapter about names and initials, though? It is really interesting... At least to me, but I am a nerd.

I am a teacher so I love reading these!!!
Please don't spell things "different" Kolten, trying to be cute with the K, Graysen, changing the o to an e, and I agree with all the variants of Madeline... They just end up writing Maddie on their papers and then you have Maddie B., Maddie L., Maddie S., etc. (that's only if they remember to put their last name)

Lol, sorry no offense was intended. I always thought I would have a baby named Christa because I loved that fairy in the movie Ferngully, but after all my hubby's terrible experiences with multiple women with names along that line he has banned it =(. I know Kristy's aren't all crazy, but he has told me many times over that I'm lucky I didn't have a K in my name other wise he would have run the other way lol.

DS's full initials are DIC, but no one really mentions his middle name. So everything is just DC.

We had a classmate in High school whose mom was one of the calculus teachers, and their last name was Sachs. The poor guy's name was Harrison, but he went by Harry. @-)

Our last name starts with Z, so no first names starting with Z and no first names that end in S (the sound just blends together).

We also don't want a name that's easy to shorten or nickname, and we don't want our munchkin to be one of 5 in his or her class. We want a name that is timeless but also not too popular.

I reallllly want a name that's 6 letters for the first and 5 for the middle, just so we all match. Well aware that's ridiculous, but I am high-anxiety about things like that

GAH DH wants the middle name to be Brian (after his dad's twin that passed away from a brain tumor). Brian also happens to be the name of an ex where things ended badly. And then were drawn out forever. Like almost 9 years of on again off again drama. But I feel like I can't veto his heartfelt request so James Brian it is.

We're the same @keiragann ! I'm a Gemme (pronounced gem, like a gemstone) so all the Gs and most Js are out. I actually have an annoying amount of rules. No first initial the same as my  husband, son or me just in case I want to do like letters on stockings or initials on a game board. No exes of course. No names of family members in our generation or younger. No weird spellings or "new names" for us. We like classic names since I could never find my name in tourist shops growing up and it made me sad.

I'm also obsessed with nickname/teasing issues. I wasn't teased as a kid but my favorite girl name is Natalie and boy is Patrick but I can just picture if they're bigger someone calling her "fat Nat" or a Mackenzie "Big Mac". It's mental I know. My husband responded that I'm giving kids too much credit. If Steve is getting picked on, they'll call him "fat Steve"... no need to rhyme things. He's so sweet

Yup, and all the kids with the "uneek" names give themselves new nicknames anyway. So it totally defeats the purpose. All of my kids with the complicated/unique/ethnic or however you choose to describe them names, give themselves nicknames and have like fake alter ego names. Some of my kids just put super hero name son their work...I'm just here like bruh...you're in the 6th grade...write your damn name.

I have the Freakonomics book and that whole chapter has stayed in my head forever and largely I agree with all.of it. On the other hand in 15 to 20 yrs what choice will we have because there won't be any Frank, Henry, Rebecca, or Janice's to pick from.
My SIL actually changed her name in her 3rd decade from Margaret aka Peggy, to Alexis. And all I could think is why??? Didn't you read the book?
That being said, my eldest son is Justin, also highlighted in the book but not as negatively.
Glad I'm not alone.
