constipation help

I have had such awful constipation and I am a little over 10 weeks. I have tried stool softeners and no relief. I took two over the counter laxatives this morning that contain bisacodyl (5mg each). Is that ok to do? Had anyone else had to take something like that to relief constipation. Now after taking them I am worried it was a bad idea.

Re: constipation help

  • I have to take miralax because I have damage from a Previous childbirth that tears back open with constipation:/ when it well managed, the next best thing for me is benefiber powder. 2tsp in water 3x/day - it's a huge help.

  • You can also try Milk of Magnesia, it tastes awful, but my midwife recommended that above all the other options like Colace, Citracel, Dulcolax... etc

Magnesium citramate at bedtime works really well.

  • I think bisacodyl is the ingredient in Docolax (sp?) - If so - it's my list of "approved constipation OTC's" - if that makes you feel any better.

I'll be asking my OB more about it at my next appointment because stool softeners aren't doing it... so I've been cycling between not going for ~5 days, breaking down and taking some sort of approved stimulant, waiting 1.5-2 days for it to work (then going like 4 times in a 24hrs...) then feeling okay for a few days, but not going again until i take another stimulant.  I don't want to play this game for the next 30 weeks...

  • Someone recommended dried apricots to me (instead of prunes). I was skeptical - but they worked. Don't eat too many at once - there is definitely a dose related effect!

  • Get Natural Calm. It's a powder magnesium supplement. Dissolves in water. I had major issues with constipation last pregnancy, haven't had an issue at all this time due to it.
  • I have been having activia and a cup of cereal in the morning for breakfast as well as two vitamin water zeros every day (for extra hydration).. The first day is a little awkward feeling, but I feel much better now!
  • Senokot-S has worked for me and works perfect...
