Vitamin D?

Re: Vitamin D?

  • Yes, if you are breastfeeding you are supposed to be giving vitamin d. Breastmilk lacks that. My pediatrician said we could start now, but for sure by 2 months of age. We started at a month old.

  • Ya, its the only vitamin not in breast milk. I thought it would be fine because DS gets plenty of indirect sunlight, but the pediatrician said we should. It's just drops so it is easy to do.
  • My pediatrician said I either need to continue my prenatal vitamins or do the vitamin d drops. So as long as I'm breastfeeding and taking my prenatal vitamins lo don't need the drops.
  • The way I understand it is that breast milk does have a small amount of vitamin D, but it's unclear how well infants can process it from BM, and back when people did things more "naturally" or in more traditional cultures babies would get lots of direct sunlight outdoors. Now in our culture most infants spend most of the day indoors, and pronged sun exposure isn't really recommended due to risk of sunburn, so we have this modern problem of lack of vitamin D, which can lead to rickets if deficient over the long term.

    My doctor also prescribed these.
  • My ped said to start vit. D at 4 months. So that's when we will be starting it, however everyone here has a vitamin d deficiency lol.
  • Interesting. Here in Germany we started dissolvable Vit D pills when baby was 10 days old (I just stick it in his mouth before he nurses - it hasn't been any issue at all). The hospital gave me a 30 day supply. Then his pedi told me he'd write a script for another 100 but we both forgot... LO only has a couple pills left so have been wondering whether to call the pedi or let it go. Think I will call after reading this thread. Thanks, ladies!
  • My ped recommended it at two weeks. I give it to him about every other day. He absolutely loves them! But my ped said that is not the norm!
  • LO started the drops when she was about a month old. She doesn't fight taking them, which is awesome. I also read that it helps strengthens the bones, so I am all for giving them to her.
  • I give LO Di Visol. It's a 1 ml dose I put in her bottle once a day. Easy and was prescribed at two weeks. We mainly BF and supplement with 4-8 oz of formula daily.
  • Ped told us to give vitamin d supplement 1 ml once a day. He said that in order for a baby to meet the recommended 400 iu of vitamin d a day baby would have to drink almost 34 oz of formula a day. We're ebf so we're going to start the vitamin d
  • Ped told me that I could use my own discretion on that. If I'm taking my prenatals and getting Vit D from the sun, baby will be fine. If I decide to give it to him, he won't overdose on it either.
  • Drops are easy, either put one daily in the bottle/on your nipple, or if you have a crier like I do, just drip it in their mouth.  Walmart & any drug store sells them - look for 400iu ones.  The Walmart ones are made/labelled for babies.
  • @lovethatcolosun , we use the same brand of Vitamin D. My son loves them...the face he makes when we feed them to him (straight in his mouth, not diluted or anything) is hilarious. It rocks his world every time.
  • At discharge, the doctors at the hospital advised us to start giving them right away so our little guy has been on them since 5 days old.
  • Vitamin D needs to work in tandem with a lot of other vitamins which may not always be absorbing well if in supplements so unless you are a crazy healthy person and feeding a lot, getting out in the sun I'd supplement. We like Carlsons
  • The dietician at the hospital suggested we give a multivitamin once a day since we left the hospital. But at our two week appointment the pediatrician also suggested we give vitamin d until he is six months. When we told him we were giving the multivitamin he was happy with that. Although The stuff we have stains and the plain vitamin d doesn't so I will probably switch over to that when what we have is gone.
  • So my peditrician didn't mention anything about vitD today. She said LO is getting everything she needs from nursing... ? I didn't specifically ask about it, & LO is doing amazing & growing like a weed so I wasn't too concerned. Anyone else have this?

I was told it goes directly to baby.. Started giving baby tri vi sol like PP when she was about a week and a half old.. It gets squirted in her mouth, some days she likes it more than others, but I figure even if she spits some out she's still getting some every day!

This is why the drops can be easier - not enough to get spit back up.  The brand I got given to me at the doctor's and I had already bought at Walmart are just called Baby D drops.
  • I noticed your name is Canada Mom so it makes me think that you are Canadian like me. :)
Most Canadian doctors do suggest that breast fed babies get Vitamin D drops. All three of mine have been breastfed and get the drops. We don't get nearly as much sunlight as other countries (like the States, envious) and Vitamin D can only be obtained through sunlight.
In fact, it's not a bad idea for you to take a Vitamin D supplement, too. I do and my older kids as well. Vitamin D deficiencies can lead to all sort of nasty crap.

And in my sleep deprivation, I realized that I was talking to the wrong person. :/ I'm sorry.

Our Dr. prescribed us vitamin D drops. You'r breast milk doesn't absorb vitamin D from your diet, that's why they suggest drops.
  • Bah I'm so terrible at remembering to give these......... Bad mom Award. I should set an alarm label on my phone
