2nd Trimester

Dentist while pregnant

i know its recommended to see the dentist for a check up while pregnant and I have a very very painful tooth ache in one of my large molars at the back of my mouth so I need to go immediately, just wondering if the dentist will work on my sore tooth (possible filling) has anyone been to the dentist if so what procedures do they take for pregnant women?

Re: Dentist while pregnant

  • They can pretty much do anything you need done, you'll more than likely need a release note from your ob with any restrictions! (Extra protection for X rays, no gas) just depends!

  • I went in during 2nd tri for a bad toothache (my gums were swelling). The dentist wouldn't even touch me without getting an OK from my OB and finding out what medications and treatments she said I could have. But after that he did the x-rays (doubled up on the protective vests over my belly) and I was good to go!

  • I just had a tooth pulled the other day; I was 19w+4, I think. My midwife had to fax over permission first, and instructions on what is and isn't recommended for pregnant women. They couldn't use anesthetic with epinephrine, which meant the anesthetic wore off faster than it otherwise would have, but they prescribed me a painkiller and it helped. They also only did xrays on the broken tooth, not a full panel.

Baby is fine. Didn't affect him at all.

Should be able to have pretty much anything expect amalgam fillings which are still best avoided in pregnancy, and also no sedation. In the UK the guidelines even say dental X-rays can be performed as normal as it's directed at the jaws only, but most still prefer to err on the side of caution and not take unless absolutely required. They will at least be able to get you out of pain, you should have something done before it becomes worse.
  • I need to have a root canal done at the end of this month. I'l be 14w2d when it gets done. Not looking forward to it, because I can not have the epinephrine, so I'm sure I'll need a shot of novocain in between the procedure. :( After that, I need two crowns put onto the two teeth that had the root canals done. I'm still waiting on the one tooth because I was more or less in the middle of all of this dental work when I found out I was pregnant.
  • Hi,

My gums have been bleeding really bad, so I saw a dentist last week. I had a "full mouth debridement" done without any anesthesia and it was one of the most physically painful things I've ever endured in my life. They wouldn't do much more than that without a consent form from my OB. Since it was so painful without the anesthesia, I have decided to postpone all other work until after I give birth in November. I will say that though it hurt like hell, I have seen a huge difference in my dental health. It has reduced the bleeding by 90%, so I still recommend you go if you feel that you need to. Good luck!!

  • @makeoutside7 why didn't you just get a consent form from your OB? My midwife just had to fax over a signed form and the dentist gave me anesthesia and prescription meds afterward.

I had a root canal done at 18 weeks, I am now 22 weeks. I couldn't stand the pain especially because I was weary of taking pain meds. The two docs I saw were really comforting and made sure to use extra precautions. They double covered me with the vests. The X-rays are pretty high tech theses days. My dentist even stays in the room while they are done now. They say the second trimester is the best time to get dental work done while pregnant. Good luck!
