Not going to voice my opinion about drinking while pregnant. Do research and do what makes you comfortable.
But for some simple wine recommendations For whites I like blends but otherwise good Chardonnays. I recommend the one done by the label Mercy. It's really good. But if you want the best then that's Chateau Montelena's. For a white blend, try Conundrum by Caymus, Wagner family wines. Wagner also did one of the best red blends I've ever had, their 40th anniversary blend.
For reds I mostly like blends, so Small Gully's Formula is a favorite. Eleanor from Coppola is also a great blend but it's hard to find.
For a general vineyard, I usually recommend Coppola wine (yes, the director of Godfather). Their diamond collection is a bit more affordable and they do everything from Malbecs to Pinot Grigio. I suggest them to my friends that aren't sure what styles they like and usually suggest they try different styles from one place. Coppola is a good one to do trial tastes with since they do so many types well. Coppola's sparkling line it's under the name Sofia (after his daughter).
If you are looking for just doing a trial on just reds and can afford a bit more then try Heitz Cellar. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best I've had.
I love the nicer boutique wines but I also love some big store brands that are great on the summer like Lambrusco! Mmmm. Haven't had much more than a sip since I got pregnant because it gives me heart burn! Don't let people scare you into not touching anything with alcohol. No need to hit the hard liquor but a glass of wine is FINE! Only here in America are there such strict standard for pregnant women because Americans tend to go to excess (just look at our obesity rate) but moderation, like with everything is key! Enjoy your vino! Salute!
@aphilli8 - rude comments are totally not necessary! And I do feel strongly about it and I am most certainly not the only one.
Please. She was not rude to you at all.
Also, while you may feel strongly about it, other people, such as myself and my doctors, feel that having a few glasses of wine during pregnancy are fine. I usually stick to a half glass with dinner.
I am not judging... All I am just saying that both of my doctors and every credible source has said that "no amount of alcohol has been proven safe in pregnancy". I don't know, I just worry that if something went wrong... that if I did drink that I would always wonder if I had of abstained from alcohol if it wouldn't have happened. You couldn't pay me to indulge in alcohol while pregnant. And I am curious where you found that alcohol is at all beneficial in pregnancy? Higher IQ?!?! Better social skills?! Also, alcohol is a depressant. I just feel very strongly about this.
All of this. I just can't do it. I can wait, it's not that big a deal to me.
I've already had half a glass of wine and it was amazing. I also steal sips of people's beers from time to time. We're going to Hawaii next week... I plan on having 1-2 half glasses there too (over the course of 10 days). I'm sure I'll get side eyed by my dh's stuffy step sisters, but I couldn't care less what they think of me.
I had 4 half glasses while pregnant with my now perfect 2 year old. Most my friends enjoyed the occasional glass while pregnant
And as for wines... I'm usually a cab drinker. Also a huge beer drinker, pale ale's are my favorite. For some reason with this pregnancy, all I want is sweet, bubbly wines ... So Moscato, Riesling Spatlese, etc.
Over the course of how much time do you finish a glass, it's no way I could hold a cup for two hours and I've read that maybe an hour maybe
I have been craving red wine lately, will probably hold off a couple more weeks before having more than a sip or two of my husbands glass then might start having a small glass here or there. That said I think we are all big girls and can make our own decision based on all the information out there and do what we feel comfortable with. It's true that no safe amount has been established, but who is going to sign up for that study?
