Mole removal

hi does anyone know if mole removal/biopsy is safe during pregnancy? My dermatologist wants to use local lidocaine. I'm just worried about any possible complications with the baby. If you have had it done in the past with a previous pregnancy I'd love to hear, Thanks!

Edit: mole not mold

Re: Mole removal

  • I have two I want removed but will wait till mid November to do it after baby.  I doubt there is an issue with the local, but honestly I just don't want another pain or ache to deal with right now.  I definitely want to do it this year though now that my huge ass deductible has been met!

I really wanted to wait too! Ob doesn't think it's a big deal and said moles change with pregnancy. But of course I went to the dermatologist and now they want to biopsy it to make sure it's fine. I'm such a worrier idk if I can wait until November!

    I'm waiting til after baby.
  • I had a suspicious lump from my jawline removed when pregnant. My doctor didn't really want to wait as my hormones were making it grow bigger.. I wasn't happy with the idea of a surgery, however small it was but it could have lead to complications by leaving it. We waited until I was 25 weeks and It was done under a local anaesthetic in theatre, the same type of anaesthetic you would have if you had dental work done. The doc had no concerns about the well being of the baby. She was kicking away the entire time. Obviously I was still very scared! The only thing was after- I had 5 stitches and when the anesthetic wore off I could only have a plain pain killer. I was in agony for a few days, it took my body much longer to heal because it was busy doing other things!

I've had a mole removed with lidocaine, not when pregnant but it did hurt quite badly after. Depending on the location of the mole too, that can affect your recovery. Mine was on my back and I couldn't lay on it for a week.

Personally, if it's not a necessary surgery advised by your doctor, I would just wait. Your baby would probably be fine and I doubt they would let you go ahead if they were worried- but all of these things do carry small risks. And also as I've said- I found recovery to be a lot harder when pregnant. It's just an extra thing to put your poor body through!

Thanks! Hopefully I can speak with my ob tomorrow!
  • Local anesthesia if fine during pregnancy. (Coming from an anesthetist here). If you would feel more comfortable to wait that's ok too! Just talk to your dr but the decision is really up to you :)
  • I had to have a skin biopsy and a mole removal and the lidocaine they used didn't have something in it (sorry I can't remember what it was but it was omitted bc I was pregnant) so it burned more than normal, but it was fine.
  • I know it's not the same as a mole, but I've noticed skin tags popping up and I'm going to wait until after baby is born to have them removed.

I had a cyst taken off my neck about two months ago at the beginning of the second trimester. They used local anesthesia. Both the dermatologist and my midwife said it was fine. I was nervous about it though!
  • Thanks for all of the feedback! It's probably best for me to have it biopsied but I just hate the idea of any meds right now.

I work in dermatology we do biopsies on pregnant women all the time. Just to be on the safe side we always use lidocaine without epinephrine...as the epi can cause increased heart rate.

I had two taken off at like, 12-13 weeks? I don't remember. Anyway, lidocaine is perfectly safe. I asked my OB and my derm and they both confirmed it was safe. I also googled and it's not unusual for pregnant women to have this done and it's safe.

One was even right on my stomach. My scar is stretching but other than that it's totally fine.

  • I had one when I was like 3 months pregnant ! It was on my back . He said there is no risk to the baby and my baby was great at her 20 week ultrasound
  • I had one removed and am about to have another. My thought on it is, if it possibly melanoma do I really want it progressing over the next few months? Nope! But I also have it in family history(my mom had melanoma--successfully removed) so it's just not something I want to mess around with.
  • I'm having one taken off this Saturday. There were no concerns from the doc at all. Mine is small and in a location where I'll hardly even notice it. I suppose I might think more about it if it was in a location that was already uncomfortable/would make it harder to sleep, etc.
  • Just spoke with ob (of course it's no issue at all). Looks like I'm going thurs. thanks for all of the feedback :)
