I'm staying away from the dyes, red dye 40 is a no no I'm my book although I know a lot of people eat the fruity colored tums. I think the ones I got are peppermint
Tums are fine. If your heartburn gets so bad that tums no longer cut it (as happened to me around 32 weeks), you can get a prescription for preventative Zantac from your obgyn. You take it twice a day, and it was basically the best thing to ever happen to me at the time...the heartburn completely vanished.
I agree with Zantac. The generic (ranitidine) works just as well and is much cheaper. My reflux is pretty much constant no matter what I eat, and it's a life saver!
The label says for pregnant women not to exceed taking more than 6 a day...but I have been guilty of taking like 10 because my heartburn was so bad! The berry blend kind is the most tolerable. Good luck!
Vinegar works better. Most heartburn (not all but most) is caused by too LITTLE acid, not too much.
What Tums do is deplete the acid in your stomach to a dangerous degree. So your body says "Shit. Better make more acid." The stomach is pumped full of acid and you feel relief. This is why tums work, just not instantaneously. If it takes more than five seconds for Tums to work, chances are vinegar will produce much better results for you.
Vinegar works instantly. When you swallow it, you can actually feel it bubbling through the high alkalinity, almost like those volcanoes we made as kids. And then you're 100% again. Within about five seconds.
Source: I have major GI dysfunction - upper and lower. I have been seeing doctors and nutritionists for years. This is one of many pieces of maintenance wisdom I have picked up on my adventures.
Oh btw, don't do this if you have severe acid reflux. That is something unique and needs to be treated professionally. It might work but i can't speak to it. I don't have acid reflux. This is for heartburn only.
