Do you and your SO have names picked out?

There are times where I feel like I'm so excited, that I'm TOO excited. Especially now that "the fever" is real.

We already have an unused girl's name from our first babe, but we (we meaning: I totally initiated this convo with my husband) have kind of picked out our non conceived, possible boy name already.

I'm that excited.

Do y'all have names?

*edited: I had wine and it needed some grammatical fixing.

Re: Do you and your SO have names picked out?

  • I am so excited for our future children but unfortunately my husband and I completely disagree on names. Plus he won't even have a hypothetical convo about it until I am actually pg. I think it makes him a little anxious because he thinks I will hold him to a certain name. So for now he tells me he loves the names Soda and Seven (from a Seinfeld episode).

Ps I also have had two glasses of wine so I don't even know if I made sense.

@cookies754 what names do you like?
  • Actually we do have names picked out. It wasn't a long thought out process- we mentioned having kids and he shared what he wanted to name his son (using his grandfathers' names). I then offered some girls' names and he picked the ones he liked the most.

That said, we'll probably end up changing our minds. I feel a little weird naming something that might not be.
  • @purrbucket I know that feeling. We waited to pick out our 2 names right before our anatomy scan for our son, but I'm just so hopeful over the thought.
  • @HookEmNelson I don't like anything that's too out there. Girls middle names will be Marie because of family tradition.

    Top girls I like:
    Isla
    Charlotte
    Lillian (Nana's name)
    Julianna
    Emily

    Boys:
William (DH's name - may mn it)
    Henry
    Andrew
    Benjamin

I know those are all pretty popular so I guess we will see what happens once I am pg.

  • Oh I am a fan of those names. Our son is Jack William-straight after my husband's father and grandfather.
  • I love Jack! Husband's cousin just had a boy and named him Jackson so that's out. We see them pretty frequently so I feel like it would be a little odd. I also have the guilty pleasure name Rocco but our last name ends like 'rock' so that would be a bit silly.

  • I have a list of agreed-upon names / names I like that husband hasn't completely vetoed.

Before I met MH I wanted to name my daughter Charlie (Charlotte nn Charlie) after my late uncle but Charlie Brown doesn't really work.

@cookies754 I hope your husband is joking about soda and seven. My husband is still convinced we can name our future son Golden. Golden Brown. His family and my family agree he gets no naming rights lol.
But I love love love the name Henry. It's at the top of our boy list!!
  • We have talked about it, and changed our minds on names every time we have brought it up again.  For girl names I keep going back to Felicity Joyce.  Middle name is my grandmothers name.

We talk about this subject constantly these days!  I think that means we have baby fever :)

For a girl, we're pretty well settled on Natalie (it was my grandmother's name and we both like it).  For a boy the only name we've come close to agreeing on is Joshua (named for DH's grandfather).  Otherwise we completely disagree on names, but it's a fun conversation.

DH is from India, so we've discussed looking into an Indian name for a middle name.
  • Oh I am a fan of those names. Our son is Jack William-straight after my husband's father and grandfather.

Love this. H's middle name is Thomas, which I like for a boy. For a girl, I like Elizabeth with the nickname Libby (then she can choose from a variety of variations when she grows up). In my family, baby's middle name is Lynn regardless of boy/girl.
  • We're set on a boy name, Paul, after H's late stepbrother but have zero clues on a girl's name. We both like very classic names, and it seems most of the girl names I like best are already occupied by someone I know.
  • We talk about names all the time. Boy names are always so much easier for us. I have a whole list of favorites! Pretty sure we have a boy name picked out (at least, I can't seem to talk DH out of it, so I guess it's picked. LOL!)

Can't decide on a girl's name for the life of us. All we know is her middle name would be Quin. It's a family name on DH's side, a surname that is going to die after this generation. MIL has expressed her insane desire for it to be used in a grand child's name, even if it's just a middle name. Except, finding a name we like that goes well with it has proven a challenge. Good thing we have time... LOL.

  • We have talked about names. DH thinks that if I "like" a name he suggests then that must mean I've decided to use it. I am having a hard time coming up with boy names that i like. Probably because I already have two.
  • We have a "running" list.  When we got our dog, he was nameless for the 1st 3 days until we stumbled across his name, Picasso.

We like unique, individual, strong names, and I don't want one of the super popular names that everybody is using, so when we come across a name that we like, we add it to the list.  We have boy and girl names picked out.

Also, one of my friends is currently 7 months pregnanat and they've had issues with friends wanting to use the same name they have picked out for their little one, so I want to avoid any issues with that, so we are not sharing names with close friends and family as of right now.
  • @MNturnsVA it took us three days to name our dog, too. I can't even imagine the struggle it's going to be for our children.

  • We picked out a boy's name when we were dating in high school, and we used it for our boy.
We never discussed girl names, but we decided on a girl and boy name before we decided to go ahead and try for baby #2.

  • I'm so relieved that I'm not the only one discussing names with my husband before even being pregnant! I thought I was crazy. :D

  • Oh I am all about this and the baby fever has even had me just signature-ing out the names. Our boy name is Beau Wesley (Wesley is my dad's middle name) and our 1st unused girl's name is Lauren Feliz (Feliz being my middle name).
  • @HookEmNelson love your girl's name choice. I'm a little biased though.

  • @HookEmNelson haha correct!!! Hi!

  • @RachelT1234 I've told my mom that we've discussed names and she thinks I'm crazy!
  • @cookies754 Hi Lauren(?)!!!
I'm a Lauren, too :-). I didn't know anyone named Lauren when I was a kid, but I sure hear my name being yelled a lot in the store these days :))

We have had names picked out since before we were even engaged, so that's weird. I'm afraid to share what they are too soon for fear of judgement.

I think it's totally normal! We started discussing it even before we were engaged. It's fun to speculate!

    It is!
  • I started having this conversation pretty early on with my husband. It helps pass the time while we aren't TTC.

Oh, we started talking about baby names way before being engaged. LOL. We knew, pretty much from our first date, that we were gonna get married though. And we started talking about what our future looked like to each of us very early on. We both knew we wanted two kids and the name brainstorming started right around then. Haha.

    Don't feel weird!

Still, we aren't even TTC yet, but we talk about names all the time. We'll be driving down the road and I'll think of a name and randomly ask DH, "What do you think about "name" for a girl?" and he'll usually make a face and say, "Eh... Not really." LOL. It's probably a good thing we starting to discuss names so soon because we can't decide on a girl name for the life of us! Our luck, we'll have a girl. :P

  • H and I are pretty agreeable on a girl's name (Kathryn Claire) since we both have some version of Kathryn on our sides.  I like that its mutable so if she wants to be a Kathryn or a Kate or a Kitty when she gets older she has a fair amount of options to choose from.  I kind of hate that my own name has no real nicknames so I'm just stuck with it.

Boys we have no idea.  He's set on a junior and I'm not a fan of having two people in the house with the same name, and all the JR nicknames that go with it.  I like classic names like John and Henry and Sebastian but he's not feeling any of them.  I figure if we do end up having a boy we'll have plenty of time to go over baby name books to find something that works for both of us.

Thank you all for making me feel less crazy for planning names so early!

  • My husband and I have been on the same page for names which I'm totally sprites about. We love Chloe or Norah for a girl and Julian for a boy. Thoughts about the girls name?? :)

I like both! Love those classic names.
  • @FutureBFP I love both of those girls names! If I had to choose though, I'd pick Norah.
  • I would vote Norah, too! I like it better than Chloe. Unfortunately, as a teacher, some names are just ruined! I've suggested a few that DH has liked but nothing decided officially really, since we're still about 9 or 10 months from TTC. Jack, after my grandpa (...hate that it's become so trendy but sticking with it to honour Gramps) and we like Emily for a girl. We know we don't want these uber unique, ridiculous spelling names that seem to be trendy (no judgment intended, to each their own, of course!), I guess we're just a little more traditional with name choices so far!
  • @skb1989 Fellow teacher here- so so so so SO true about names being ruined. It's a travesty.
  • @skb1989 1. Teacher here too and names have totally been ruined.
    2. We named our son after my husband's grandfather. We constantly get asked if Jack's full name is Jackson. Nope.
  • After being a teacher, there are so any names I would never use, despite there being nothing inherently wrong with the name.

    #1 on the list:

Nicholas (I am actually convinced all children with this name are troublemakers because I've seen so many)

  • Teacher here as well. I have loved so many names that have been ruined! Although I feel like if we did eventually pick one of those names, I wouldn't associate it with my former students anymore.

  • Aiden (and any other spelling of the name) have unfortunately been ruined for me. The association with at least 6 over the years has been mind blowing.

Yes. 100% agree with you on that. I have also had a few Jaiden, Caiden, Etc.

  • I had a Caidyn, Jaidyn (oh that girl) and Aiden, plus a Haley, Kaylee and Sadie all in one class. Goodness.
