Vacation with 2 year old ---- Ideas?

DH and I are off work for a whole week in August and are contemplating on taking our 2 yr old on a vacation. Aside from 1 overnight stay at a water park, we've never taken DD on a vacation before. Actually, DH and I haven't been on vacation since she was born. A lot of it has to do with my anxiety of traveling with a kid, along with getting her sleep and schedule completely off track. Anyway, needless to say, DH and I  both need a vacation, and I can't bear the thought of leaving her behind. So....

Does anyone have any ideas of where we could possibly go that's toddler friendly? We'll be flying from Chicago, and willing to travel as far as Mexico. All our passports are good to go on that end. We'd like to go some place that both DH and I can enjoy as adults, but also plenty of activities for DD. A babysitting or kids' club  program would be a plus, too! Anywhere in the US is fair game for us. And I don't think it matters much, but I'll also be about 20 weeks pregnant while on vacation. TIA!

  • Club Med in Ixtapa Mexico is absolutely phrenomenol with young children. You sign up for childcare for the week and can use it as much or as little as you want. They will follow your naptime and eating schedule. Some families dropped their kids off all day every day, we just opted for a few hours each day, especially during naptime so we could enjoy the pool while our son was napping. The resort is small and easy to navigate. The buffets have many healthy simpler toddler favorites as well as fancier things for grownups. The coolest activity the adults in our party did was trapeze acrobatics which was honestly totally awesome, but we also spent a lot if time at the pool, pool bar and clean beautiful beach. Except for the traveltime/ layovers/routine upsets, this was the most stress-free family vacation I can imagine.

  • We have always traveled with my daughter since she was a baby. This year now that she is two, we have some trips geared towards here. We will also be traveling to an amusement part (it's a combo amusement and water park). There's also the beach, cruises, or you could just do a few day trips to some zoos, children's muesum, etc.
  • We have a son who will be two at the end of June. We booked a vacation (flying from Boston) to Clearwater, FL for six nights. I, like you, have some anxiety about sleep schedules, etc, but at the same time he is getting old enough he is enjoying activities and there seems to be so much to do there! Our five days consist of three "activity" days where we will go to Busch Gardens (has a whole Sesame Street area), the Tampa Zoo, and a Marina to see dolphins. Then, two "rest" days, where we can swim/go to the beach/walk around, and most importantly fit in some naps!
