8 week old is 16lbs!!

My 8 week old is 16lbs, but 24.5 inches long!! He is in the 99th percentile for height, weight and head circumference. He is EBF. I am 5'9" and DH is 6'1". Doctor says it's normal and okay. I read the updates on everyone else's 2 month olds but didn't see any huge babies like mine. Anyone else's 8 week old have similar proportions? Just looking to feel better.

Re: 8 week old is 16lbs!!

  • My current LO isn't but my first was like that. Don't stress every baby grows at their own speed. Our guy was huge and at one point was in the 105 percentile for his weight. His dad and I are not overly tall. I was worried because I'm a thick girl...i was so afraid he was going to have a weight problem. He's now 5 and he is in the 60th percentile and you would never know he was a thick baby. Don't stress your baby is just perfect!

My son is going to be 9weeks on Friday. He is 24.4 inches and weighs 13lbs 2oz. He's a big boy. People always ask if he is 3-4 months. I wouldn't stress.

  • My LO is 24inches at 6 weeks. He is in the 97th percentile for height. Hilarious to DH and I considering he is 5'5 and I'm 5'0
  • My LO is 5 weeks and 13lbs, he gains about a lb a week
  • Our LO was in the 99th percentile for height at 2 months (24 3/4"), but 51st for weight. He's just a really long kid.
  • I'm glad I read this post. I've been worried about my little guy gaining too much. He's also EBF and was gaining a pound per week. Fortunately he's slowed down now. But do not worry about it. As long as the pediatrician isn't concerned try not to be concerned either. Every baby grows at different rates. And LO's growth will likely plateau at some point. :)

@ali0608 - none of my business but I've heard this from other people as well. Some kids are "off the charts" in terms of percentile. A friend of mine had a baby like this whose head circumference was off the charts. He was wearing adult sized hats when he was 2 and shirts wouldn't fit over his head. So it's not unheard of to be given a percentile that's not in the 0-100 range. Though it's not common.
  • My daughter was 15.6 at her 8 week appt. My first was just the same and now she is tall and skinny. She just gets chubby and then boom is 3 inch taller lol

A lot of people say things that are incorrect every day. Off the charts and 105th percentile would be different. The very definition of a percentile means it cannot be above 100% (some definitions may say it cannot be above 99).

Now, the current charts pediatricians use is based off kids from years ago; not kids exactly today. So being off the charts simply means the baby is bigger than their charts go. It's based off the Normal Distribution of weights.

Ok. Enough of my lesson. But percentiles should only go to 99 or 100 percent.

  • Fair enough. I'm a math person myself so I completely agree with what you're saying. I guess some pediatricians maybe use improper terminology when they mean to say off the charts.

In the end the numbers don't really matter as long as baby is happy and healthy.

Yes, happy and healthy babies are the goal.  I was totally off topic. But sometimes wrong terminology bothers me.  Doctors should know what they are telling people.  I don't expect everyone to understand; I expect doctors to understand.

  • Wow @ali0608 and @chambersbaby2015 sorry to have caused such a debate. I agree that it clearly doesn't make sense that a percentile could be a over 100%. Just repeating what it said in our paperwork from his check up from that visit...? Regardless, the point I was making was that babies can seem so big now and level out to be healthy, on target kiddos. :)

I totally agree with that. I think the growth charts need to be updated! Babies are bigger now!

  • My son will be 8 weeks tomorrow and he weighed in at 13 lbs just before the 7 week mark. And he was about 24 inches long. Which amazes me since my husband is about 5' 9 and I'm barely 5' 3 but he was 12 days overdue and has been on the large side since birth.
  • Lo is 8 weeks, had a doc visit Monday but wasn't his 2 month well check. He weighed in at 15 lbs 5 oz! Comfort nurses due to some reflux issues. Doc laughed and asked if I was producing badger milk!
  • DS is only six weeks old and weighs almost 13 pounds and is over 25 inches long with giant head, so he's 99th percentile for height, weight and head, and I'm only 5'1" (DH is 6').  So you're not alone with a big baby. :)

My son is 9 weeks old, weighs 15 lbs 7 oz, and is 24.5 inches long. He is in the 97 percentile, the doctor also said he looked like a 4-5 month old baby. He is EBF. Some babies are just big :) I wouldn't worry about it, especially since you and your husband are tall as well and your doctor has not shown any concerns.
  • My baby is 12 lbs and some change and he's about to be 8 weeks on Tuesday. I am only 5'0 and DH is 5'10, I wouldn't worry about it. I actually like the fact that he is big and not tiny:)

Wow my baby is only 8lbs at 22 inches. I def notice a difference between her and allllll the chunky babies I see. I know my scrawny baby is healthy and so are the chunky ones so I'm not worried. She's got small parents 5'1 101lbs and 5'6 118lbs
