My midwife today said that the office typically recommends proactive for pregnancy; however, everything I've read says not to use salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, both are which in their products. Any thoughts or other recommendations on this?
The only reason it is suggested not to use it is because there are really no studies done to prove whether it is safe or not. Neither salicylic acid nor benzoyl peroxide will get into your bloodstream, however, so most medical professionals will say use it. I'm a skin therapist and personally I despise proactiv. I prefer my clients to use benzoyl peroxide as a spot treatment only. I've had a lot of success with the Murad acne line (and they have an anti-aging acne line, bonus!) and you can also get this in a trial kit to try out at Ulta. Remember that it takes at least 8 weeks for your skin to cycle through and clear up so whatever you go with you must give it at least that amount of time to see if it works, I recommend 12. But you will also have a baby within this time frame so you may need to give products more time due to hormonal changes.
My doctor (OB) told me the only things I should be using is an astringent and an oil controlling toner. Make sure both are free of salicylic acid though.
I had HORRIBLE breakouts off and on during this whole pregnancy and my face has been so oily its uncontrollable. I started using Neutrogena 2 in 1 face wash/makeup remover in the shower once a day, Olay oil controlling toner in the morning, & Sea Breeze astringent multiple times a day (whenever I feel like my face is getting oily or when I just need to freshen up), it works wonders! I have zero breakouts now! Ive always tried to stay away from harsh chemicals on my face by using organic face cleasners from Lush, but they just werent strong enough once I got pregnant. These are all really gentle on my skin and have no harsh chemicals to worry about, it was seriously so grateful for his suggestion!
