Underactive thyroid?

Just wondering if anyone knows at what point I should be seen by a midwife or specialist when I have a prediagnosed underactive thyroid in the UK? I have heard mixed messages about how soon I should be given extra thyroxine for supporting baby through first 12 weeks and am already over 5 weeks. By the time appointments are booked it will be further along and I don't want it to be much longer before seeing someone for advice!

Re: Underactive thyroid?

  • I would let your doctor know asap so they can do a blood test to determine if your dosage needs to be changed. My dosage was changed about every 6 weeks last pregnancy.
    *TTC since July 2010
    *BFP #1- 11/12/12, m/c 11/16/12 @ 6 weeks

    *BFP #3- EDD 03/9/16

  • I would see the doctor who is giving you your thyroid meds.... I have an AI disease and was referred to a specialist team... my GP did a full review of my meds the day I got my BFP and removed/adjusted/swtiched what needed to be done then

  • Thanks! I went the doctors as soon as I got a positive which was the day my period was due. They didn't do any bloods and didn't seem to know when I would be referred- suggesting it may be after second missed period (never even said congrats or yes you're pregnant-just that she'd refer me to midwives- good job I saw test!) I chased it up a few days later and she had referred me to midwives and specialist but still not heard anything. I'm a bit anxious as I knew it would need monitoring so we deliberately were trying and even had an appointment prior to enquire what would happen- feel like I'm doing what I can but am getting frustrated that times ticking on!
  • Thankfully my doctor is the one whom told me I was pregnant and upped my meds that day without any blood work. I go for blood work Aug 3rd and get results Aug 10th. My OB does not deal with my hypothyroidism, my GP does. She also knew we were TTC so she had told me even if I tested at home to up my medicine as soon as I got a BFP then call her

My endocrinologist immediately upped my medication when I told him about the pregnancy. I am actually seeing him for bloodwork and a check in before my first ob appointment.

Your midwife is supposed to do your home appt before your first scan (could be up to 12 weeks) however my friends never contacted her.  You should get a letter ASAP and the midwife's number even then I wont be seen until 7 weeks by her.  I would call your GP and leave a message for the doctor to call your back and say that you are concerned about the level of your thyroid meds and will not see a pregnancy professional for a while.
