any other runners out there?

I am having a tough time running how I used to for fear I am going to cause damage to the baby. I had an early miscarriage last August. It started as I got done with a half marathon. I know they say running is fine, and that I probably wasn't too blame but I still just feel scared to keep running. It feels fine to run though. I train for and run several marathons a year. I am signed up for 2 still this year. Not sure what to do about those quite yet. Are there any other runners out there that can relate? Are you continuing your training? Are you scared to keep running?

  • I do the minimal amount of cardio required and most of that is walking... so no

  • I run! I too am scared. I was having some early spotting and went on a run (easy 3 miles) with DH but it was hot and I worried the whole way about overheating and ended up walking. I decided that it's probably ok to run like you say, but for my anxiety management I'm just going to do brisk walking and other light cardio until I feel more reassured (first doctors appointments to make sure baby is ok and growing). I was going to train for my second half (oct race) but decided against it.

  • I didn't know I was pregnant when i was running in kentucky in 90°temps doing speed work in the mountains earlier last month. I'm totally freaking out about that heat. I am happy to see another runner on here. I plan to run as long as it feels ok. I think like you @hope+love+joy I might wait to see how baby is doing before resuming any harder effort runs.
  • I used to run about 25 miles: week. I just ran my first marathon in May.l!!

I've scaled back since finding out I'm pregnant and only doing 3 miles 3x per week. My doctor advised against marathons/ half marathons while pregnant, but definitely encourages me to keep running (slow enough that you an carry on a conversation), keep hydrated and eat something very small before/after I run.

The doctor mainly discouraged against rigorous training bc it's already in the 90s. HOT.

If you live in a cooler climate, you might be able to keep running comfortably!
  • Congrats on your first marathon @Romano123 ! It's nice to hear what other dr's are advising their patients to do. Very helpful. I have my first apt on thurs. I am curious about how my dr.feels about running.

I run. I was already cutting down mileage after a marathon last year and wanting to focus on shorter distance. Now I'm just running for about 30 minutes on days when it is under 80 degrees and not too humid. I'm not paying attention to pace and just running easy.
  • I run as cross training. I'm an athlete and had some major concerns about intensity and heart rate. I read this article and it helped a lot. I plan on keeping my training at about 70% and focus on hydration and replenishing nutrition more frequently. End all, listen to your body and talk to your OB always :)

It also gives a reference to a book I'm going to look at

  • I a light runner 3 miles about 4 days a week. I am still doing slower runs when the heat isn't too bad and pushing a jogging stroller which adds to the workout but I too am nervous. I know most Drs are ok with running although I know when I see mine in two weeks she will tell me by too (she did with ds and I gained too much weight!)
  • I had a MC in March. It started after a 7-mile training run for a May half. I kinda went into a funk and haven't been regularly running. I started running again just before my BFP and now I'm scared. I have another half in September and am thinking of just walking it.

  • I had a similar situation, @marylynn07... I had a miscarriage at 6w1d in April, and at the time I was training for a half marathon. Since I started training in February and got my BFP in April, I figured I'd be fine, since I was used to running 7-10 miles at a time.

And honestly, the miscarriage was probably not related to the running, but I'm so paranoid that I'm just trying to take it fairly easy, exercise-wise, and just sticking to light cardio and yoga / pilates / etc.

  • I'm a runner too :) And, I'm scheduled to run a half marathon on Aug 15th. :(  I have a doc's appointment this Friday so I am eager to ask about training volume and the "race" itself (which - for me - is really about having a good time with my girlfriends who are doing their 1st half marathon...this will be my 5th...and about the waffles at the end! lol)

So far my running has been almost non-existent since we found out, but even if I can't do the event I am signed up for I'd still like a solid "OK" from the doc before I resume. Hoping he'll say a slow run/walk combo will be fine :)

Glad to hear there are other runners on here!
  • I am happy to see so many runners on here. This is an unexpected pregnancy for me.i was in the middle of 50+ mile weeks training to qualify for boston in a couple months. So I am still trying to digest what will be coming my way. I will be sure to add my dr input on this after my apt tomorrow.
  • I do maintenance runs, usually 3 miles, once or twice a week when I'm not training for a race.  I'm debating on whether or not I want to do a 15k I had my eyes on in early October- not because I think it'll hurt the baby, but because I don't know if I'm going to get sick and not have the stamina to train for it.  Also, I got swollen super early with DS because I was on my feet so much.

I'm leaning towards doing it because #1 I got my sister interested in running it with me, trying to get her to run her first "big" race  #2 I know it would be a really good motivator for staying fit during my pregnancy

  • I run, and I ran most of the way through my first pregnancy - I actually helped out/ran with a cross country team for my first trimester. I definitely slowed down, at first because I had always heard the rule that you should run at conversation pace while pregnant, but by the second tri I couldn't run any faster than that anyway. I plan on running add long as I can into this pregnancy, too.

I ran through my first pregnancy and documented it on my website: www.chaseeverysecond.com

Since having a baby I'm no where near the same mileage level as I used to be and run about 25 miles/week now. I plan to maintain that mileage at a slower pace and then run/walk if needed as I get towards the end of my second pregnancy.

Through this pregnancy and my previous one I worked with my doctor on what would be the appropriate level of effort. Definitely work with yours so they can consider all factors (your health, family history, etc.) into the equation.

  • You guys all make me feel lazy and out of shape lol. I tried running starting a few months ago and hurt my foot. Now I'm afraid to start again mostly because I may hurt my foot again (I couldn't walk on it for 2 days). Anyways, keep up the great work!

  • I run long distance as well - mostly halves, but some fulls as well.  I struggled to get pregnant because I was exercising so hard and it was messing with my progesterone and ovulation.  I decided after my last 10-miler and half in March and April that I would cut back substantially.  Six weeks after I cut back, I got my BFP.  I do, however, think this varies from person to person as I know plenty of people who have gotten pregnant while training for a marathon.  In the end, I think you need to listen to your body and your doctor.  For me, I am mostly walking and doing an hour of weights 3 times a week - with some light running (2-3 miles at a slower than normal pace without intervals).

Glad to see there are so many athletes on this board!

  • Went to the dr.tonight and he had nothing to tell me except that if I am a seasoned runner that I can run. To stay hydrated and listen to my body. But he also said running is so bad for my joints. So......
  • Running a 5k today, my biggest concern is overheating (it will be 97 degrees). I've cut back to around 3 miles, 3 times a week. I had been doing closer to 5 miles previously. I plan on taking walking breaks if I feel like I need it.

Last go around, I ended up needing new (larger) running shoes during the third trimester and did a lot more walking, as I had a lot of pregnancy related lower back discomfort.

Saw my doc on Friday and he has some reservations about me running the half I've signed up for in August (I'll be just about 13 weeks). So I asked him about run/walking it and still he wasn't keen! I was really surprised considering I am a seasoned runner and was averaging about 15km a day earlier this year! Nothing high risk about me so far, he'd just rather that I didn't. Looks like I'll just be cheering my friends on instead of running (especially since DH was there at the appointment and has been on me now about not running). Disappointed but there will be other opportunities to run :) On the bright side ...I'll have more energy for shopping during the weekend! (Edited for spelling)
  • Great to see so many runners out there! I'm signed up for a marathon in August as well (was supposed to be a BQ attempt) and my doc gave me the ok to run it, just not at BQ pace. Basically at "conversation pace" and dial it back or stop the race if I'm not feeling well. So far no issues with workouts, and I feel great thank goodness so no plans to drop out or drop to the half right now. Just no more 60-70 mile weeks :)
So happy to have fellow runners to geek out with!

I run! And I have run, lifted weights, and do Hiit workouts during a past pregnancy! I would say that as long as you feel okay doing it and your Dr approves, it's fine! Just stay hydrated... And listen to your body. I tend to get nauseous if I get into intense workouts, so I just listen to my body and scale back or look for an alternative. I think if you regularly do this, it's good and helps to deal with hormones and mood swings! Pregnancy can be a whirlwind of emotion, so I like running to clear my mind ;)
  • I run too :) I talked extensively about it with my ob/gyn. I slowed my pace 2 mins per mile and listen to my body I'll walk if I need to and I am CONSTANTLY drinking water from my camelbak. It still makes me nervous since I too miscarried but I remind myself I'm being very safe about it and it's important to remain healthy :)
  • I was very active before my first pregnancy but my doctor was very against running while pregnant, so I stopped. No matter what I tried though I just count get the same "workout" feeling. I gained way too much weight and ended up with preeclampsia (not that they were necessarily connected), but this time around I am determined to stick with a more moderate workout routine and see if it makes a difference.
  • First pregnancy, 5 weeks, hoping my midwife gives the ok...I've been running for 10 years it's a huge stress relief for me...had just substantially improved my speed earlier this year, but planning to take it easy until I know more. Already registered for my 5th or 6th half marathon in October, maybe I'll walk it?
  • bpg11bpg11 member
I, too, am a runner and weightlifter. Don't have a doctor's appointment for another 2 weeks. Have been walking at a fast pace. I miss running, but it's hard to run and keep my heart rate under 140 bpm.
  • Got a chuckle today during my what I can't even consider a run...slow jog I suppose...ha! Well since I have a super high heart rate as is I have to slow wayyy down to stay under my dr recommend 140. I am "running" a 15 to 16min pace ha. What's funny is no one knows yet and it must look like I am a snail out of shape on my app now to all of my running friends. Awaiting some questions from them all! lol! :))
  • I ran up until about 28 weeks with my 3rd and loved it! I'm super nervous because I've had 2 mc (6w and 14w) and I'm just paranoid something is going to happen. I KNOW running/jogging does not cause a mc, but I'm very nervous to do it. For now I've continued to bike and do other stationary fitness activities.

  • @rmbukowski just out of curiosity, which marathon are you signed up for?
  • I run too...not a whole lot, 10-15 miles/week for now and some strength training. Ran a marathon in 2013, have done the half 4-5 times. Signed up for a half October 4th (before I got knocked up) there's an option to switch to a 5k but for $95 freaking dollars would love to run the whole thing if it's safe. Will ask my midwife about it at my initial appointment next week. For now still doing the usual but skipping speedwork and slowed down by about 2:00/mile.

  • I'm a runner too... And a hot yoga and spin class person as well and it's been tough but I have reduced my workout to power walking and elliptical.
I had a MC in April and ran at that time and while I'm sure it was not related based on what the docs said and what I've read I can't shake the uncertainty.
We used an RE this time to get our BFP and they were very strict that I don't overheat or do anything too physical during my TWW so I have refrained from starting back up. They specifically said no hot yoga or running or spin.
FWIW when I was pregnant with my son, I went to spin classes til I was 36 weeks pregnant and only stopped bc my bump was too big. I also had a friend that jogged while pregnant with twins. I think all pregnancies are different and trust your body and your doctor, but being overly cautious is the route I'm personally taking this time!

  • Another runner here! I also do Orangetheory fitness a few times a week. With my last pregnancy, I ran until the morning sickness hit. After that, I switched to running/walking intervals and then just walking. I'm hoping to run farther into this pregnancy but we'll see. I try to listen to my body and slow done when I need to. OTF is going to be great as you wear a heart rate monitor during the workout. I found a lot of great advice from the book below. It has more up-to-date info and recommendations about working out while pregnant, especially for those people who are athletes or intense fitness buffs.
  • I was in the middle of training for a marathon when we found out. I'm planning to still run throughout but have decided not to continue marathon training. My dr. gave me the okay to keep running so I'm just going to listen to my body and run what feels good regardless of pace. Running has actually been the only thing that's made me feel normal lately, so I'm going to keep at it as long as possible.
  • ceds07ceds07 member
I'm a runner too! I plan to keep going as long as possible again. I did decide to skip the half in the fall but otherwise won't change much until I have to. Last pg I ran a 5K at 32 weeks and did regular vinyasa yoga until the end. I already feel like I might not be quite so lucky this time but we'll see. It's like anything else really, just listen to your body and modify as needed. Every day is different and I would add more walk break as necessary. And HYDRATE
  • At week by week pregnancy book it says don't get ready for marathon or anything just keep your exercise routine with less effort (-%80) I am just telling girls please keep yourself safe. No biking no horse riding no ski or water sports just walking and yoga and some heart or muscle workouts softly. Swimming is the best every doctor says. Just wanna share these it's up to you have great 9M everyone:)
  • I was running 12-16 miles a week and doing Crossfit other days (my gym is open air with only box fans). My fear now is that I live in MS and it's a heat index of over 100 degrees everyday. The only semi cool time is at 6am and I have morning sickness! Are any of you still running/working out in heat like this? I don't want to do anything to cause a problem, but I need to workout for my sanity.
  • ceds07ceds07 member
@meredithroberts66 do you have a gym you can go to that's air conditioned? I totally hear you on sanity. What about switching to spinning indoors?
  • roo1ooroo1oo member
I'm running in the heat, but I go at 5am a few times a week. I feel my best in the morning. @meredithroberts66 you could try running in the evenings at dusk and just go slow and take water with you.

I ran during my last pregnancy. Even had scheduled a 1/2 at 12 weeks and ended up not doing it because with the morning sickness I could not get my training runs in. I did do a 10 miler at 15 or 16 weeks and it went great! I am planning to do a 1/2 with friends at about 18-19 weeks this time. I likely will not run the whole thing, but will do a run/walk. But I am still training for it as much as possible right now.

As long as your doc gives you the ok, you should keep running but at moderate efforts. Conversational pace is a great gauge. Your heart rate means little, and the advice of not going over 140 bmp is outdated. Allow yourself to walk when needed, don't go for PRs at races, and give yourself more rest days. Exercising through pregnancy helps keep your weight gain reasonable and actually helps alleviate a lot of pregnancy symptoms. But no matter what, if you don't feel comfortable running or exercising during your pregnancy then don't.

  • I'm  marathoner as well- completed my first full last November. Due to our infertility, our doctor considers my pregnancies to be high risk, and does not feel comfortable with me running. I know a lot of pregnant mamas who do run though. This is something I'd discuss with your doc! They can probably give you better insight.

  • Thank you @ceds07 and @roo1oo! I guess I am going to just go to the small air conditioned gym for a bit (so I can go right after work) until the heat subsides. Or run/walk around 8pm (if I can stay awake that late). Once you quit working out on machines, it is so hard to go back! Hopefully this heat will die down soon and I can go back to my old routine.
