Midwives Taking your word that your pregnant

After trying for a baby for ages, me and my husband finally conceived. I was so excited I rang up the doctors for an appointment and raced there the next day. I expected him to be ecstatic for me lol but he just gave me a number for a midwife. Didn't even ask me to do a test. I got an appointment at 6 weeks just to fill out paper work. Then went back at 8 weeks for my urine to be tested (not for pregnancy) Im now 10 weeks and have my scan appointment coming up. Has anyone else's local hospital/midwife just took your word that you are pregnant as no one has actually asked me to do a pregnancy test. I'm scared I will go for my scan and nothing will be there. All though I did lots of tests myself. I have hardly any symptoms. Slight nausea 6-8 weeks but that's subsided now. Am I just worrying too much? Lol

    Hi!
I'm based in the UK but had the same experience - went to doctors thinking they would confirm it 'officially' but they just took my word for it. Said two positive home pregnancy tests sounded good. Have now been for two appointments with the midwife and they have only just taken my blood and urine for normal tests (that was 10 weeks!). My first scan isn't until I'm nearly 13 weeks and I couldn't wait that long, so we went for a private scan last week.
I hadn't had much in the way of symptoms so the private scan just put my mind at rest!
Baby looks fine and looking forward to seeing him/her again in a few weeks.
This is my first pregnancy but I guess everyone is different - now instead of worrying about a lack of symptoms I'm just enjoying things.

  • Yes you are worrying too much. I'm sure everything is fine. I had my first appointment at 6 weeks, I found out at 4 weeks. I expected to take a urine test at my appointment for them to make sure but no urine test. When I made the appointment they asked how I found out and I said I took more than one home pregnancy test and they all came out positive. I got to my appointment and the first thing they did was an ultrasound and I heard the heartbeat at 6 weeks.

  • The same happened with me. I think that's normal. I called and said I found out I was pregnant, they asked the date of my last period and scheduled an appointment for the 8th week. It does seem strange not to have "official" word, but pregnancy tests are reliable, and if you haven't gotten a period, it seems pretty obvious.

    Thankyou that's a big help
  • Same thing happened to me. I called and said I'd had 2 positive home pregnancy tests. She asked me when my last period was and scheduled me for my first ultrasound and appointment around 9 weeks.
  • I think exactly the same! I have positive test and no period but keep thinking that I'm going to go for my scan and there will be nothing there!! I also have no symptoms really other than sore boobs and bloating. My scan is a week today and I have no clue how far along I am! Just glad other people are thinking the same thing
  • Same with me! I took a dollar store at home and they took my word for it. My midwife doesn't even check HCG. I went in for my prenatal blood panel and HCG wasn't selected. I asked why because I've seen so many women posting about levels being checked so frequently. She said, they avoid unnecessary testing and that they only check HCG if the US shows that the pregnancy is not viable. I personally like avoiding unnecessary testing.
  • I had the same, however when I spoke to my midwife she was lovely and very helpful, I have my first appointment when I am 9 weeks, she was happy with 3 positive tests. I was a little surprised at first when I learned they take your word for it though.
  • I said that to my partner after my first hospital appointment yesterday at 11 weeks 2 days ..they just take your word for it. I have my scan next week so I can't wait but I wondered that myself yesterday!
  • And congratulations :)

Congratulation everyone. I am glad I have just read this after 7 years and 4 mths of trying, plus one cycle of IVF and one FET transfer I finally got my BFP on Monday, done 2 tests one Monday one Tuesday, I was the same phoned my Dr straight away and the receptionist just passed me to the midwife, altho later that day I did speak to the Dr about some of the medication I am on and he said to take a test again at the weekend just to make sure, which sort of brought me down a bit.

I suppose they hear it all the time and its nothing exciting to them where as for us its really exciting. I am booked in for an early scan on Monday as I did have a laparoscopy for blocked tubes, so need to check I am not eptopic, which I dont think i am, as I am not in any pain, I am 5 weeks today, so think I would be feeling something by now.

Got a good feeling about it tho, cant believe it after all this time, we had just booked to go to Cyprus to do IVF again when i found out, so that all has to be cancelled, we both think we are going to wake up any minute. So excited but cant tell anyone just yet. Eeek!
