Smoked Brisket?

Hi! I've been craving Mexican food, and today I had a smoked brisket taco. I'm now reading that pregnant women should avoid smoked meat (I've been careful to avoid deli meat, but didn't think about smoked meat). Should I be concerned?

Re: Smoked Brisket?

  • If it didn't make you sick, you're just fine. The deli meat deal is just that it carries a higher chance of containing listeria and other bacterias that could make you sick. If you get sick from that while pregnant, it could be bad for baby. There is always a risk in any meats, fruits, veggies, and many other foods. But if you have not gotten sick or any food poisoning symptoms, you'll be ok. That goes for any foods.

  • I've eaten a ton of brisket this pregnancy and baby's fine. I had actually never heard that about smoked meats before. I'm going to look into it now.
  • Smoked meat contains carcinogens. Eating it in moderation is ok, though avoiding it would be best
  • Thank you guys! I'm going to be more careful going forward, but at least I don't need to panic. And yes @loveleighmami smoked meat is the official food of Texas! I can hardly get away from it ;)
  • Yah, I BBQ on charcoal all the time. Seriously, everything is bad for us, and it's a wonder women have been surviving pregnancies through time. My mom used nothing but sweet n low while pregnant with me, which we now know is terrible in general, especially a pregnant woman, but hey, I'm here. Eat the smoked meat!

  • Smoked meat in this context is more referring to things like bacon, ham, and hot dogs that may not be properly prepared. Like the deli meat it's a bacteria concern. So, if you are eating smoked meat that is bbq prepared yourself or from a restaurant you trust there is no reason to worry. I smoke my own meat all the time and always cook to a safe temperature and enjoy it. :-)
