Anatomy scan at 17w5d

So my anatomy scan is booked for the end of the month, and my doctor seems to think he will be able to tell me the sex. I won't be 18 weeks yet, will they even be able to give me an accurate idea? I'm all new to this, but I thought I wouldn't know until 20 weeks!

My next ultrasound won't be until 30 weeks, and I really want to know!

The genitalia is usually fully developed by 16-17 weeks. You should be able to see. Yes that's a tad on the early side. My OB refuses to do anatomy scans before 19-20 weeks. So it all depends.

  • If baby is cooperative, you should be able to find out. Everything is pretty well formed by 15 weeks. Usually if you can't find out at the anatomy scan, they have you come back in a week or so to recheck.
  • Thanks ladies! I figure if it's not certain, I can book an elective a few weeks later!! The waiting is killing me!
  • I just had my anatomy scan Thursday at exactly 17 weeks and she had no problem finding out the sex :)

My doc won't do it until after 20 weeks. But hey even if you don't get a good shot you'll just get to go again in a few weeks! Yay!
  • I had a scan at 16 weeks and 4 days bc of twins...and we could tell for sure that it is two boys. As long as baby lets you look you ahould be fine! Good luck!
  • Thanks!!! I can't wait to see baby again!! I will be happiest to see it swimming around! But I really want to start shopping
  • I found out at 12 weeks. We are having identical twins and opted for the maternity 21 test. We found out the gender through the blood work which is more reliable than the ultrasound. Identical twin boys! Double the trouble, twice the fun :)
  • My anatomy scan is scheduled for 17w3d. Hopefully we'll be able to find out! I can't wait to start shopping for my sweet pea! :) congratulations mama!
  • If baby lets you you should be able to see. We had our first part of the anatomy scan at 17w exactly and it was very clearly a girl. I'm still asking them to check again at my 21 week anatomy scan just to be sure, but it was pretty clear.

We had the anatomy scan at 16w6d after abnormal genetic testing and my (though stubborn, like daddy!) son let us see - but wouldn't flip over for anything! More blood work confirmed its a boy. Good luck!
  • @beccachartier that is my maiden name!! I've never met a Chartier. we live in Nashville.
  • My doctor does anatomy at 20-22 weeks. I do think that certain doctors do have higher powered ultrasounds which maybe why some doctors might be confident doing it a little earlier.
  • I was 16w 4d and had a gender scan done. We could clearly tell its a baby girl! My anatomy scan is this Thursday. I'll be 18w 4d then.

I had an ultrasound at 13+2, and it was very obvious baby was a boy. Of course, he spread his legs wide open for a great view which helped!

ETA: genetic blood test confirmed gender a week later!
  • I had mine yesterday and was under the impression that I was 17 weeks and 4 days, and was then told by the UT that I was 16 weeks and 5 days. They definitely did a thorough check and were able to tell me that I am having a little guy.

Mine was early because of positive on a test in regards to a possible raised spine, but by finding out that my due date may be off, the blood may have given a false positive during testing. I say don't panic or be nervous. It is a cool experience and you get to see a full look of your LO. I hope it went well or goes well :)
