November 2015 Moms

Vacation

Keep in mind I will of course be calling my doctor to get final advice but figured I'd ask other expecting mommas too ☺️☺️

We will be traveling this week up to Colorado Springs for vacation & have planned a trip up to Pikes Peak on the railway. I've never been & was super excited until I started researching high altitudes while pregnant & honestly now I'm torn. I will be right at 23 weeks at the time of the trip. The Pikes Peak site has listed no rules on PG moms riding up so I'm not sure on what to do. There is no rule saying I can't go.

I've continued to stay pretty active throughout my pregnancy & don't know if that could be a factor in how I feel at the high altitudes (we are traveling from Texas)

I was just curious to hear from other mommas who have experienced something similar.

I just did the cog railway at Pikes Peak at 18 weeks pregnant last month. Nobody gave me any trouble about riding it pregnant and I did just fine. Just limit your walking around at the top, I did get a little more out of breathe. But then again you are at 14,000 feet! And stay super hydrated and bring snacks. The trip itself it about 3 hours round trip. I drove around Rocky Moutain national park the very next day at 12,000 feet and was fine then too. The biggest thing is prolonged exposure to high altitudes, but they only let you stay at the top of Pikes Peak for 30 minutes. It's not very long at all really.

  • Water and sunscreen! Even not pregnant when I went to the Andes for my honeymoon it was a big adjustment. Make sure you take your time walking around, stay hydrated, and protect yourself from the sun. :)
  • People live at or near that altitude so I can't imagine it being a terrible danger.  If you don't feel good when you get up there, ride the train back down.  Listen to your body.

  • We spent a week out west 2 weeks ago. I did notice I got more winded while hiking around Yellowstone and opted to sit out a number of times while my husband went further. We were mostly at 10-11,000 feet and I did noticed that my ears popped way more than usually and my head hurt the first day there. But otherwise I was fine.

People live at that altitude. You'll be fine.
Just stay hydrated and listen to your body.
Also know that between the altitude and being pregnant you will burn faster. Keep up on the sun screen.
