june mama with a question - when were you able to put your LO down for naps w/o holding?

desperate mama over here with a 4 week old who I have to hold all day for naps to get him to nap longer than 30 minutes. just wondering if there is a light at the end of the tunnel, if your lo was like this, when did he/she start being able to take longer naps on their own? tia!!

  • Is he swaddled? I had to swaddle for naps and bedtime or mine could not be put down. He only would nap in the RNP with the vibration on. Would never lay flat. He only got better really when we sleep trained around 3 months. That's probably not the time frame you were hoping for. But seriously, swaddle if you're not and see if that helps. Hang in there!

  • As I sit here w my 4.5 mo in my arms, I don't have an answer for you lol
  • For me it depends. She pretty much always falls asleep with me. I try to give it like 10 mins and see if she is sleeping deeply. And then I very gently lower her into her crib and keep her as close to me as possible as I do it. Hence lots of back pain lol! My MIL got her to fall asleep on her own in her crib a few times but I am too chicken to try it yet. Have you tried a pacifier? My LO likes to fall asleep with a paci but spits it out when she is fast asleep. Good luck!
  • I'm also at 4 1/2 months with dd sleeping on me currently. She fights ME every step of the way. Her daddy can put her in her swing and she'll sleep for him. But she will not be set down flat and sleep for anybody...
  • 2 months for us. I feel like 2 months is a turning point for a lot of things. Hang in there.

  • My LO has been a great sleeper since the beginning but is starting to do this where she falls asleep in my arms and when I lay her down she wakes up. I have found that it helps to swaddle and play music. I also rub the top of her head and she usually falls back to sleep. Good luck.
  • Mine is almost five months and still won't consistently nap in his crib...and definitely won't for longer than 30 minutes. My advice is not to stop trying. I gave up trying to put mine down for naps after about a month with no success and here I am, almost four months later with a kid that's just starting to go down in his crib. Another thing you could try is a smaller crib. Our son didn't go down well at night when we used his regular crib, but he did just fine in his smaller, travel crib.

Swaddle and use white noise like a fan. When you lay them down, keep your hands on them at first then very slowly take your hands away, maybe even one hand at a time. Sometimes turning them slightly on their side and gently patting their back helps too.
