High-Risk Pregnancy

Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Fortunate enough to have another pregnancy with HG :-L
I have tried diclegis, zofran, ginger, crackers, etc etc. and at 10w it's worsening. I went to the ER yesterday for fluids as it had been 36h of not holding anything down.
I asked about phenergan, and the ER doc wouldn't give it to me. They gave me IV zofran, which didn't work, as I had already told them.
Any last resort tips?
I NEED to feel Normal again (or as close as possible!)

Two years, two losses and three IUIs...

We are having TRIPLETS!

Re: Hyperemesis Gravidarum

  • Sounds like it is Zofran pump time. Talk to your OB about it. I started out with a BMI of 17 (pretty underweight) and lost over 10 pounds with HG so this was the last resort and necessary.
Going in to the ER and getting IV Zofran after you've already started the cycle of vomiting continuously and getting dehydrated will often make the drug fail to control your symptoms. The pump gives you a continuous "flow" of medication so your body never has a chance to start that cycle. I got denied IM phenergan too (they cannot give it IV because it will burn up your vein, thus it is only given as a shot in your buttocks; intramuscular).
I'm 18w2d today, my pump was removed at 16 weeks, my HG has subsided and I'm fine now with just the occasional Zofran 8mg ODT.
My pregnancy is now completely normal with the exception of my little girl have a single umbilical artery (SUA) in the umbilical cord (which is completely unrelated). I have just now hit a BMI of 18, but the trend is upwards so it's good!
Good luck, I really do know how awful it is. It's not fair for you to keep having to go to the ER so be pushy with your OB if you have to.

  • Thanks for your response!
I did not have to ask for a pump, it was just set up immediately when I called about nonstop vomiting and a nurse will come tomorrow. I feel like an invalid, I can hardly bring myself to get out of bed. I am not underweight at all, but I suppose having triplets is a big enough deciding factor.

  • @Kelley421 I'm very glad you are getting the care you need. A few women from my birth month club have HG as well and went weeks without getting relief or anyone to take their symptoms seriously. I wound up quitting work (was going to quit at 6 months anyway to be a SAHM) because I couldn't get anything under control. I know just how physically and mentally exhausting it is to never feel well. I honestly still haven't had a whole "good day" but I have good hours where I am productive and can function.
That is amazing that you are carrying triplets!!! Congrats and take care of yourself.
  • This is my 3 pregnancy with HG. I had the zofran and iv pump put in in my last pregnancy. I didn't like it too much. And. The Zofran did not help much with the nausea. I ended up losing 22 bls and actually never gained any and suffered throughout my whole pregnancy. My son was perfect when he was born except he was underweight-5lbs. With this LO I'm taking phenegan suppository and i feel great. I haven't been to the er for dehydration and I'm eating like crazy. I got to keep my job this time too. Only trick to it is it makes me really sleepy. If u wish ask your ob About phenegan. I hope you feel better soon.
  • The phenergan knocked me out too! I couldn't stay awake with it and wound up in the hospital multiple times because it didn't help me enough to function day to day. Everyone responds to medications differently and what works for one person might not for the next. A log as you have a doctor that is concerned and willing to try what's necessary (and safe) to get in under control, I think that is the important factor.
  • I have had HG this time around also. Zofran pump didn't help at all. Finally ended up with a PICC line at 13 weeks and get phenergan through that. They don't recommend phenergan through IV anymore, only central lines and IM injections. = / I give myself 3 bags of fluids a day at home and phenergan every 4 hours. Finally stopped losing weight at 18 weeks and have made it to 28 weeks now. I would hate for you to need a PICC because it si so invasive and has such a high risk of complications, but it literally has saved me and my baby's life....
