Is sleepytime tea safe???

I asked my midwife about herbal teas, sleepytime tea, and even sleepytime extra with valerian root. She said drinking the teas were fine even the sleepytime extra because the amount of tea I would have to drink for the valerian root to be dangerous would be difficult. They also told me drinking caffeine is fine which I'm iffy about and have been refraining from. I've looked it up online and found many different things on it some saying avoid all herbal teas others saying just to avoid raspberry tea. I'm not sure how I feel about it except I love my sleepytime tea to help me sleep at night. Anybody else have input on teas???

Re: Is sleepytime tea safe???

  • Hi! I use vanilla sleepytime tea because it's the only thing that really let's me sleep these days. It doesn't have any caffeine (that I know of) so it should definitely be safe! If your doctor approves, I say go for it. :)

As for other teas I drink sweet tea about once a week just because it makes me so hyper. I can't completely cut it out of my diet!

  • I've been a little crazy with my tea and only drinking ones that say preg safe
  • I got a box of pregnancy teas in my bump box, I drink those.

  • Sleepy time is probably safe for second tri, but the chamomile can cause uterine contractions (you'd have to drink a gallon probably) and the mint can cause your milk to dry up (again, you'd probably have to drink a lot!). So I'd consider avoiding it in their tri. But I'm also a nervous nelly about early labor.
  • I would listen to your midwife. I'm doing the same. Love tea time!
  • I looked at tea. I think there is a huge difference between grocery store tea and authentic loose leaf that is meant to be used like a medicine or supplement. St John's Wort and Gingko are the more dangerous ingredients you will probably see in more basic teas. I would avoid any tea that makes medical claims (laxative, weight loss etc) but I did drink celestial seasons or twinnings chamomile (I did see there are 2 types of chamomile German and Roman and only one is supposed to be safe and one is discouraged but grocery store teas just say camomile).
