Baby choking

My husband and I were woke up to our LO screaming and struggling to breath. I immediately picked her up and began smacking her back. She sounded super snotty. She has not had a runny nose at all. Finally after taking a bulb syringe that I grabbed from the OR at my place of work, (because the ones you get from the store suck) I began to suction her nose and mouth. After a couple of minutes of getting nothing but snot out, she seemed better. Now she is sleeping on my chest, because when we lay her flat she sounds congested. Needless to say we are scared to death to let her sleep in her room. Any advice from STM. NERVOUS NELLY.

Re: Baby choking

  • Some nasal saline drops and a cool mist humidifier will help loosen things up in there. She was probably just trying to swallow her snot. You could also put some blankets under the crib sheet to prop her up, or let her sleep in a bouncer next to your bed. It may take a while before it clears up completely...
  • It could be reflux. Either way i would elevate the head of her mattress and if it continues call the doc bc my DD would have reflux come up and hold her breath bc it burned.

  • Our dd is in thee hospital right now for severe episodes of choking and gagging. She had a stuffy nose too which I don't think helped things. They started her on Prevacid yesterday and already we're seeing improvement. I would have her seen to check for reflux.

You can use saline drops or spray as much as you need, i asked 3 pediatricians they all agreed, the actually prefer it because a congested nose could lead to an ear infection
  • Thank you guys so much for the advice. Update on Delaney. We have elevated her head. Also we were keeping her to warm. No more snotty nose and she seems to be doing much better.
