Constipated 4 week old

DD is bf with formula top ups. Had a pretty rough week thinking it was wind but realised she was constipated. Her last normal poo was Wednesday morning, Thursday night I realised she hadn't pooed since so I stopped formula started ebf with small bits of water throughout the day to help soften everything. Took her to dr yesterday, she just happened to time a small poo in the office so he wasn't concerned and said to ride it out & he won't prescribe laxatives to under 6 months old. She's straining & crying all the time trying to poo. Is there anything except from water & BM to relieve her? I've been trying knees to chest to help it out to no avail

  • I'm in the same boat. I would call your Doctor again and express your concern. My twins are 7 weeks and he recommend prune juice, mylicon drops and probiotics. These have helped my girls but I was like you and had to ask for them to help me because they were so uncomfortable. Hope your LO gets relief soon, I know it's no fun watching them go through that :(

We used a little pear juice when my daughter was constipated at about 5 weeks. Helped a lot!

  • Baby juice? Did you give it straight or diluted? How much? I didn't know you could get OTC laxatives for infants but I went and got some hopefully it works soon but next time is much prefer to use juice

We got the Gerber pear juice and put a half an ounce in her bottle. It usually took a couple of feeding but it usually helped.

We have also used the glycerin suppositories. Those work very quickly as well.

  • Just wanted to chime in that many EBF babies get to the point where they poop once a week. It's normal not constipation. Posters so far might be in a different situation but I thought I'd bring it up so FTMs are aware.

poops will slow sometimes to days.. As long it's soft when they go then it's perfectly normal.. My LO went from like 8 times a day.. To one blow out every day and a half

My LO just turned 5 weeks and his poops have slowed considerably! The pediatrician said it's completely normal. But even at two weeks I was concerned about his lack of poop and he said so long as the baby goes within 4 days and it's normal (not pellet like) then they don't consider it constipation. I'm sure another doc would disagree but we've got by that theory. I hope your little baby feels better!! I'll Pray for poop (won't be the first time haha)
