Gestational diabetes whomp whomp

I just got the word back that I failed the three hour glucose test and I have gestational diabetes. I have a family history of it and I have a insulin resistance, so I'm not surprised.
I'll be seeing a nutritionist soon. I was wonder if anyone have any advice. I was think about downloading an app to help me track blood sugar and carbs. Does anyone know a good one?

Re: Gestational diabetes whomp whomp

  • Sorry for the bad news!  I don't have experience with GD, so there might be others with better advice, but my husband has type 1.  When he was first diagnosed, we used the Calorie King app to help track carb info.  It looks like now they have a version that you can also use to track blood glucose levels, but it's only available on iphone.  (https://www.calorieking.com/products/healthediabetes/)

He used to have a spiffy glucose meter that you could connect to a USB port and upload graphs/charts so you could track trends in your bg levels, here:  https://www.bayerdiabetes.ca/en/products/contour-usb-meter.php  It was cool because you don't have to reenter the data anywhere, it just takes your readings and stores them.

  • I don't use any apps, but I'd hold off on buying a monitor, as when I took my gestational diabetes education class (dietician led) they provided each of us a meter and taught us how to use it. My advice is that it's ok to feel frustrated at first. Gestational Diabetes is different for each person. You'll do great!
  • I got the news myself on Monday. I met with the doc today and got all of my testing supplies and she walked me through "diet" and numbers. I put "diet" in quotes because it seems pretty normal. You can still eat carbs, just go for the good ones and always balance with some protein.  3 meals and 3 snacks a day. Easy peasy. Test your blood glucose 4 times a day and keep track of what you ate. Not such a big deal. Have a kiddo's birthday party tomorrow, so that may be more of a challenge, but eh. It's for the baby. I can do anything for her for a few months.
  • Can I ask when your test was? I also have a family history, and my midwife is still having me wait until 28 weeks for the one hour test.
  • I failed, too. I started testing 4 times a day on Tuesday. It's not too terrible, I'm just slowly figuring out the good foods for meals and snacks. I struggle with coming up with ideas as to what to eat. I've done some research online. I just want sweets even more now that I need to limit them :)
  • I didn't download an app, because counting the actual # of carbs, like 15 in a cheese stick, didn't help me. i had to focus more on servings of carbs and types. I'm sick to death of cheese, eggs, and peanut butter already, and it's only been 2 weeks. I am following the diet so carefully, and sugars are still crazy..... Had 200 and 55 in the same day yesterday.... Not sure how long they will let me stay off medication at this point.
  • Oh goodness Im sorry to hear your news. GD runs in my moms side of the family. I was tested early for it but passed that one. Im 28 weeks now. I took my second 1 hour test yesterday...low and behold I had a weird sugar drop today at work. Was embarrassing and weird all at the same time...had medics called to work and everything! About an hour and half later my doctors office is calling to tell me I failed my test (ya think? Lol) and wanted to schedule me for my 3 hour. Im scheduled for my 3 hr test Wednesday now (was the soonest nurse could get me in, after explaining what happened earlier). Yet another diet I have to follow. (It was hard quieting smoking and coffee/caffeine already and I thought I had already changed my diet for the better with the occasional sweets)
I'm pretty sure I'll be failing mine as well. Please let us know how things go and what you find out. Thanks for sharing too.
