Glucos test & impulse control

I have never been the type to snack in the middle of the night but ever since I got pregnant.... Once or twice a week I wake up in the middle of the night with my stomach growling. I get up have a small glass of milk and a fist full of bran and go back to sleep. I have tried not to eat before and I just can't sleep and then after an hour or two I get a headache. As soon as I eat it's gone. Of all nights to be starving it had to be the night b4 the glucose test.... I have been up since 3 am starving! I only have to make it to 9:15 that's when the last draw is but idk if I am going to make it as bad as it sounds. I just want a bit of milk, and my fridge is right down the hall....

  • Don't do it! I would hate for you to fail your test because you gave in.  You can do it, Only a few more hours.  Good luck.

  • I've always ate before my glucose test (this is baby #3). My Dr even told me to eat something before I come in, like scrambled eggs, and to just avoid sugars. Unless they specifically told you not to.
  • Thank you! I am calling my doctors office when they open in an hour!
  • Definitely! I hate starving with headaches!
  • I have seen many different approaches to the 1-hour preparation on this board and a couple years ago on the BMB when I was pregnant with DD. I always follow my doctor's orders, but I also make sure to read up on things so I can ask the right questions. I just came across this informational page which I find concise and interesting as it relates to eating or not before the 1-hour screening:

My doc said to eat a normal meal 2 hours before the appointment. I usually eat carbs for breakfast but that morning I'm going to see if I can get DH to make me some real breakfast. ;)
  • I work in a lab in Canada. The Gestational Diabetic Screen used to be a non-fasting test here. There was a huge increase in false positives in the test because women would eat or drink before going in and they would have to do the longer test (which after fasting overnight was most usually negative). We now recommend fasting for 3 hours before the first one. It decreases your chances of having to go in for the second one. Right now it's only a recommendation, but soon we will turn away anyone who isn't following the fasting protocol. It's a waste of time and money.
  • Thanks for all the input girls! I do not have gestational diabetes but they do think I have hypoglycemia. I'll do more testing after the baby is born but after reading about it, it is starting to make sense.
  • I have to fast for 12 hours before mine.... And I have a similar nighttime hunger issue, except if I don't eat when I am hungry I am in my bathroom throwing up. I honestly have no clue what I am going to do. I don't have my appt yet, so I have a bit to discuss it with them. But the fasting I am more worried about than the actual test and 3 blood draws, plus approx 3 hours at the lab.

my doctor said the day before just eat a lot of protein and no sugars, juices, etc. I can drink water in the morning that's all
  • All I'm allowed for 12 hours before is water and any medicine I'm supposed to take.
