Cervix shortening

I'm 24 weeks with twin boys, today I had my 24 week scan (i have an ultrasound every 2 weeks). I was told my cervix has shortened from 37 mm at 22 weeks to 27mm this week.
The doctor said if it gets below 25mm at my 26 week scan they will have to start my on progesterone pessaries. And I need to take it very easy and watch for early signs of labour.
Has anyone else had this happen? I'm so scared that I will go in to labour very early.

Re: Cervix shortening

  • My good friend had that in her first pregnancy around 24 weeks and her OB put her on bed rest. She was on bed rest for 10 weeks, then when it was lifted, she went another 5 weeks before that LO was born. I know it's different with twins, but hopefully you find peace knowing that your doctor is keeping a good eye on you!

  • When I was 19 weeks, my cervix was 20mm. So my OB put me on bedrest. She monitored me carefully so that if I had Cervical Insufficiency, she'd put in a cerclage. At my 20 week scan, I was 27mm. At my 22 week scan, I was 35mm. So my OB concluded it didn't warrant cerclage. She took me off bedrest. But I'm still on vaginal progesterone daily. I hope all goes well for you too! I'm glad to hear your doctor is watching you closely. Good luck!
  • At 22&2 they found mine to only be 6mm and I was admitted to the hospital immediately... two weeks ago today. They won't do a cerclage because it's twins and I have so little cervix left, there is the risk of puncturing a sac.

Heart beats get monitored twice daily, contractions three times, and I've done the progesterone nightly. I get an ultrasound weekly to see if the bedrest/progesterone is doing anything. Immediately after the one last week, I was told there was no change, but my fave nurse was reading the notes to me and said they had put down that I was now at 8mm after they really looked at the scan. Not a whole hell of a lot, but better than less. Either way, I've been told to expect to be here at least to 32-34 weeks, unless I deliver sooner. I don't think they have much hope of my situation getting better like PP.

Let me known if you have any questions!
  • Hi, I am pregnant with twins also and at my last OB appointment I was put on Progesterone for the rest of my pregnancy. This is due to the fact that I had my first child during my 6th month and we are worried I may not be able to carry the twins full term. I get my next scan on Thursday to check my cervix length, I have a scan every 4 weeks as of right now but that is going to change soon. I am currently 26 weeks 1 day. Good luck & I hope everything works out for you!
  • Catching this at this point in your pregnancy is a good thing! Your babies are likely viable/able to go to the NICU and I've heard very many success stories even with pre-term labor and delivery - since it's something that can be monitored for and everyone can prepare for it. Good luck mama! Praying for you 3 :)
  • Thank you ladies for your advice and kind words of support. x
  • I'm in the same boat.  I just found out last week that my cervix was measuring 1.6 cm which is about 16 mm, I believe.  I'm on bedrest and will have weekly OB/ultrasounds.  I'm 25w5d currently and hoping to make it to full term.  Good luck to you!
