Accessory Lobe/Succenturiate Placenta?

Hello mamas!

I just had my anatomy scan and although I was very pleased to learn the sex of our child, my main concern was locating the placenta. At 14w I went to the ER for heavy bleeding. At the ER, the attending said there were no issues, placenta looked good, just a threatened mc. My next OB appt, she told me I have placenta previa which would explain the bleeding. Needless to say, with the conflicting stories I was confused but OB figured we would treat it as though it is previa to be safe. The u/s report even showed conflicting statements ("placenta is located high in uterine fundus" and "placenta completely covers cervical os").

Today, I was diagnosed with an accessory placental lobe, or Succenturiate placenta. The main lobe of my placenta, though low lying, is on one side of the cervix while the other lobe is near or on top of my cervix. The doctor (not my usual) said its nothing to worry about. However, now that I am home researching, I've noticed there are some scary complications that can arise from this (vasa previa to name one). Does anyone have any experience with this or know anything about it? Googling is showing me lots of pictures of placentas but not too many actual info pages that don't require a radiology background. I really do trust my regular doctor. I am just anxiously awaiting her return from vacation! Thanks ladies!

  • I would try really hard not to Google anymore. You are just going to freak yourself out more. It seem like googling medical stuff either gets you complicated info that you don't understand ....or people's horror stories (it seems like people only take to the internet with their bad experiences, not the good ones).
It is probably best to try and wait to get concrete info from your doctor. I know this is easier said than done. My 20 week scan showed an abnormality in the umbilical cord and I have to see a specialist tomorrow. My doctor said no googling and I haven't (if you know me then you would know that is huge!). I know I will be freaked out with all the info tomorrow, so I didn't want to spend the past few weeks feeling that way. Try to stay positive and maybe distract yourself as much as possible until you can get info from your doctor.

  • Thanks @KLHauck12! I agree googling can be scary! I consider myself fairly well informed when it comes to this pregnancy and this is just not something I had ever heard of. I tend to arm myself with knowledge and although hearing all of the complications that can arise is not something I hope happens, it really doesn't freak me out at all, strangely enough. Yes it is scary but I would rather know. I think I'm just at that awkward stage of pregnancy where we are in the "wait and see" mode until we know for sure what it is or if the placenta has moved. Which is frustrating! I'd much rather have a plan of attack. Plus it irritates me that the doctor just kind of blew off my question, which honestly I didn't realize he had done until after the fact. He's "the baby man" around here and has delivered most of the babies in our families, so he probably knows what he's talking about, lol.
