failed one hour glucose :(

hey mamas, just wondering if anyone else had experience with failing the one hour glucose test?? i know a bunch of people who failed the 1 hr test, 2 who skipped out entirely on the 3 hr test, and one who took and passed the 3 hr test. any tips or recommendations? i have ten days before the three hour test... if i start eating healthier and exercising more will it help?? i haven't been doing too badly on either front but there's definitely room for improvement...

Re: failed one hour glucose :(

  • Many, many people fail the 1 hour test and everything is perfectly fine. So many that my doctor skips that all together and everyone takes the 3 hour one. Good luck!

  • yeah dont worry about failing the 1hr test , you will deff pass the 3hrs test , Good luck :D
  • thanks ladies! i hate needles and they always have a hard time getting blood from me so i am kinda dreading it as well as being stuck in the lab for 3 hours! guess i need to find a good book!
  • I'm doing my 2nd one today. In Canada it's 2 hours, not 3. I'd say wish me luck, but I had GD with my second son, so my chances of being positive this time around are higher.
  • oh @angela_angel, good luck anyway! isn't like a 2 in 3 chance of repeating GD or is it higher? anyway maybe you will be lucky. what was it like dealing with GD the first time around? were you able to manage it with diet and exercise?
  • Agreed, lots fail the first one and then take the second and everything is perfect!! I wouldn't worry honestly ;)
  • I failed the first one. Going in for the three hour tomorrow morning. Crossing my fingers.

I failed the first one and passed the three hour test. It made me soooo sick though! I threw up half way through the test but my doctor said it was fine, thank god! I did not want to take it again. My doctor told me to do a carb high diet like three days before the test... Have carbs with every meal. Besides that I didn't really change anything about exercising or dieting. Good luck! I'm sure you'll pass, a lot of women fail the hour test.
  • @meghan82, I'm not sure what the exact odds are, but they are much higher. I had to test my blood sugar with a glucometer 1 hour after meals and record the results and attend regular appointments at a diabetes clinic until my little guy was born. Mine was diet controlled, but if that doesn't work they'll put you on insulin shots. I had a really hard time keeping much down with my last pregnancy so my sugars were always out of whack. They thought my son was going to be over 9lbs but he was 7lbs 6oz. Everything went back to normal after he was born!
  • Any suggestions on what to eat before the one hour? Mine is coming up. It's early in the morning.
  • Definitely don't worry, it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with yourself (or baby). It could of been something you ate that triggered or body had a slower reaction than hoped by the lab. That's why they do the 3 hour test to re-check results and get a more accurate screen. Keep your head up!
  • I failed my 1 hour and then passed my 3 hour.  I just got my results back and I passed the 3 hour test.   It wasn't fun to take and I thought for sure I had diabetes, but I passed!  Don't worry.  If you do have it, it is manageable.  Good luck!

  • I went straight to the three hour test expecting it to be the wrost thing and was surprised at how easy it was! Just take a book to read or music to listen to for each hour of waiting. Even if you fail the big test. . Like i did, and have been diagnosed with GD its surprisingly easy to manage. I'm not having to have any intervention at all and while exercise and diet help is your hormones that can have a bigger impact. I have taken it as a good opportunity to improve my diet and exercise and a good chance to really eat properly and find it easy to do for my baby.
  • thanks for all the encouragement everyone. i found out that i scored a 136 on the one hour which is not really that high but since i did it first thing in the morning and hadn't eaten anything since the night before my doc said she recommends the 3 hour one to get a fuller picture. apparently 130 is the new cutoff being adopted by many doctors because it can catch up to 90% of GD cases. at first i was mad because according to the lab results 136 isn't even a failure but i realized if i do have GD i want to find out so i can protect the health of my son! so i will survive even if the test is going to be awful. i have rolling veins and tiny veins as well and getting my blood drawn is a horrible experience 98% of the time, so i can't even imagine doing it four times in one day, but i will survive and ask them for a pediatric butterfly :)
  • hey ladies just wanted to post an update that i made it through the 3 hour test. it was not so bad except i felt like i was going to pass out between draws 2 and 3. the people at the lab were really nice though and they did use a pediatric butterfly this time which made the actual drawing of blood much easier than usual. when i felt faint they gave me ice packs and had me put my feet up. after a while i felt better and just started to be insanely hungry! i couldn't drink any water during the test either so immediately after i went to my car, drank a bottle of water and ate a power bar... then took myself out to lunch! i am waiting on the results but i am feeling more calm now-- no matter if i passed or failed, it will be manageable!

Interesting that your doc uses 130 as the cutoff - my midwife uses 140!  I had a 142 on the one hour, but I had eaten lunch about an hour before, so I think that's what ticked it up a bit. Tomorrow a.m. is my 3 hour test... I'm more worried about being seated in the lab for that long, bored out of my mind. I plan on bringing a book and my grown up coloring book, haha!
  • @lnord7 yeah i have heard 140 was the norm for a long time but when reading up on it saw that at least according to webMD, apparently 140 catches 80% of gestational diabetes cases while 130 catches 90%... who knows? i hope we both pass the 3 hour! i did bring a book but i found i wasn't feeling well enough to concentrate on it so i actually watched the TV in the waiting room... awful daytime TV shows, lol. but the real reason i wanted to respond is that i so want a grown-up coloring book! sounds like it would be very relaxing to color! i will be ordering myself one :)
  • I failed my one hour too. I was really bummed at having to do the 3 hour because I almost fainted from the 1 hour! Hopefully I can stay alert for 3 hours! My appointment is a week from today.
  • I failed the one hour by 13 points, and passed the 3 hour one. If your doctor is using 130 as a guideline, you'll probably most likely pass it, considering 140 is what most doctors use.
  • @meghan82 the coloring book is the best! I plan on reading as long as I can first, but then coloring....because I'm a damn adult! :) I found mine at our Michaels, so I'm sure you'll find one in any craft store.

Also, I'm sitting here with 2.5 hours left like

  • I failed my 1 hour on Thursday and cried the whole way home (stupid hormones). I had just seen a specialist two days before for my baby's 2 vein umbilical cord (and luckily found out she has no negative effects from it). But I just couldn't handle the thought of worrying about something else. She is measuring big (which is a relief considering the cord) but now everyone is asking me if she is bigger because I failed the glucose test and maybe have gestational diabetes. So now another thing to worry about!
My 3 hour test is in a few weeks because I am out of town for a work conference next week. I really hope I pass. I only failed by 6 points (my doctor uses 140 as a cut off)
  • hey ladies just wanted to say i got my results and i passed the 3 hour (with one abnormal value). good luck to you all, it is not at all an easy test to go through. @KLHauck12 i know it is stressful but just know you can handle it-- even if you are diagnosed with GD-- it is better to know than to have another thing to worry about. since i had one abnormal value i will be watching my diet much more carefully than before, even if i don't have to test my sugars. just keep reminding yourself you CAN handle this and though it may be a pain in the butt it is nothing to be worried/ashamed about. i am a super anxious person but going in with that mindset made me feel a lot better.
  • @lnord7 good luck and take yourself out for a tasty meal when you are done! i gobbled down an energy bar on my way out the door of the lab and drove myself directly to lunch!!
