Conceiving After Mirena

Hello! Just curious as to whether anyone has had trouble conceiving after Mirena? The DH and I have started discussing TTC a second child within the next 6 months and I'm just a little nervous that it might take awhile or that there may be issues after having it removed. I've had it for a little over 2 years. Our DD will be 3 in January. Any advice would be totally appreciated.

Re: Conceiving After Mirena

  • Hi! I had Mirena before my first pregnancy to treat Endometriosis. I had my mirena removed in March, but went on a progesterone only BC pill to get my cycles back to a "normal" schedule since I never had a period while on Mirena (I had it for 3 years). We stopped the pill the first of June and I found out I was pregnant right before Christmas - it took us 7 cycles to conceive which is right in the realm of "normal". The Mirena gives a localized hormone that does not enter the bloodstream, so you can begin trying to conceive immediately after removal. If you are that concerned, you can ask your dr. when you have it removed. Good luck!

I had my Mirena removed August 22 and conceived after my cycle in October. My doctor said I was kicked and loaded after she removed it and had quite the laugh when I came back pregnant six weeks later!! No problems at all-GOOD LUCK :)>-

    Locked and loaded rather...
  • Thank you ladies so much! Such great info, you've given me a lot of reassurance! :)
  • @britt428 I got the Mirena out this morning and it was so easy, just like a lot of women on this board always say! I get super anxious at the doctor's office and pass out when I give blood though so I was really worried but it was a breeze!
  • DH and I are also going to be TTC within the next few months. I've had my mirena for 4 and a half years. Im having the worst anxiety over having it removed and that conception wont be as easy as I thought it would be when I first had it put in.. Thanks for the reassurance.
  • Had mine taken out may 2014 got pregnant July 2014. I sadly lost that baby but it was unrelated to the BC. It can happen very quick!
  • I had my mirena out in June 2014. We started TTC in August 2014, we got out BFP feb 9, 2015. So it took us 6 cycles to get pregnant !
  • Thank you guys for sharing! Hopefully when we finally decide to start TTC it won't take long to get pregnant. I've just got this fear in the back of my mind that something will go wrong. I think that's due to just me having baby fever so bad. But good luck to lavenderbrown1018 on TTC!
  • @britt428- I have that same exact fear. It's nice to know I'm not the only one.
  • It took me 6 months I had it in for 2 1/3 years
  • I started charting. FF is not liking a lot of my temps. I have a pretty rocky chart. Hopefully it'll clear up eventually. I know this is to be expected in the first week and especially in the first cycle after Mirena but I can't help but worry that I'm broken.

I had my Mirena removed on Monday and started charting the same day. My temps are all over the place -- I have no idea if that's because of the Mirena, me being a light sleeper, or just my natural temp fluctuation. You're not broken!!! Everyone reacts so differently to IUDs so you can't expect things to be "normal" right away. Good luck!!

  • @lalalorelai Thanks! I need this reassurance! I'm on what I thought was CD8 but i just started a period again. Wonky cycle is an understatement at this point. But I'm excited to see it balance out.
  • Had Mirena removed December 23rd and a positive pregnancy test January 22!
  • @elfsgirl08 - was that pregnancy a successful one? I've been reading horrible things about how you should wait a few cycles before actively TTC, since the lining of the uterus isn't thick enough to support a pregnancy, and several women on other boards/websites have reported getting pregnant the first cycle, but suffering a MC :(

  • I had my mirena removed on the 3rd of June and got a positive pregnancy test on July 3rd. Unfortunately I lost the baby, and my doctor thinks it's because my uterus lining was too thin when I conceived. When you have your mirena removed talk to your doctor about when the best time is to start trying after you have it removed. If they suggest to wait a cycle, listen to them. I didn't and now I am kicking myself. I will never know what the reason was that it happened, but I will always wonder.

Good luck to you and I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy when you conceive.
  • So sorry for you loss @NO21282. Thank you so much for that advice. I'm having mine taken out in about 3 weeks so that is a question I will definitely be asking my doctor.
  • *lurking* Happy to see this post because this is about to be me. Excited and nervous!

  • For anyone else lurking and wondering, I did ovulate my first month off Mirena but it was a long cycle and a long wait for ovulation. CD26 and then a 10 day LP. Definitely still hoping things will be more normal this cycle but happy I at least ovulated.
