Birth control breastfeeding

what is the best method for birth control if I'm breastfeeding? We are trying to wait at least 2-3 years before anyone. Thinking IUD, but doctor suggested depot shot. I'm on mini pill now, but it's not going to work with a newborn, trying to remember to take it is very stressful.

Re: Birth control breastfeeding

  • I was going to do the mini pill but I can barely remember to take my multi vitamin and I even set an alarm on my phone for that! Lol. So I think I'm going with the mirena since I definitely don't want to do all of this again in another year or even 2 or 3 years. :) good luck with your decision! I used to be on Nuva ring and loved it but can't remember why my doc said I can't go on it now (I think it has to do with milk supply or breastfeeding)
  • I got nexplanon (the arm implant). The iud freaked me out too much although I know complications are super rare.

  • I just went to my 6 week follow up and the doctor and I agreed on the Mirena IUD. No estrogen so it won't impact supply.
  • I'm also going to get Mirena. I've asked a ton of people about it and it basically sounds like either you love it or you hate it. Guess I won't know till I try it.
  • What's the difference between Mirena and IUD?

    Mirena is a hormonal IUD.
  • I'm also going with the Mirena while I'm breastfeeding
  • Can you not take a birth control pill while breast feeding? I'm in my 30s and would like to try for another baby in a year. The only thing is I had a c-section and cannot get pregnant for at least a year. I don't know why but I'm uncomfortable with a lot of the newer methods for birth control (IUD, Mirena, nuvo ring, etc). I want to stick to what worked since I was a teenager. I'm hoping at my 6 week apt birth control pills are an option.
  • They are definitely an option... I personally was horrible at remembering to take my pill BEFORE my life got crazy with a newborn, so I prefer something I don't have to think about.

The only pill that is an option while breastfeeding is the mini pill because the hormones are not safe for babies. It's a lot less reliable than other birth control pills. You have to take it at the exact same time each day and even then it's still not as effective as other pills. It's how my sister had 3 kids within 3 years & 3 months. That's a risk I'm not willing to take so I got the Paragard IUD, which is hormone free.
