I have been asked by my parents to go on an 18 hr road trip my husband had agreed for me to go but of course I'll feel sad If i left him. But then agian he left on a fishing trip with his buddies and seemed he was fine. I'm thinking if I should go or not because my lower back starts hurting if I sit for too long the way that I sleep is with alot alot of pillows including my husband haha as a pillow I want to go but I want to be comfortable idk what I should do??? Any mommas out there go on a road trip and if you have how did you manage to stay comfy ?

Re: Question! (18 hr Roadtrip)

  • I travel a lot and I get uncomfortable now:(. Three hours with two stops is kinda my max now in a car. I am going to have to cancel on my future sister-in-laws bachelorette party because I live the furthest away and will be an 8 hr trip. I can't find a good flight to upstate NY that doesn't still involve a drive:(. I would make sure that there is no rush to get to where you are going to make sure you are able to stay comfy.

I just went on a 14/15 hr road trip. I first suggest talking to your OBGYN about the road trip and see what he/she says. Mine suggested compression socks the entire time and stopping every two hours to get out a walk around for a bit. Going there honestly wasn't too bad but coming back was worse - not horrible and was manageable but harder and had to stop more.

  • And here I am complaining about a 5-6 hour one I have coming up!  I'm debating on not going and letting my husband bring a friend on that trip.  But the flip side I cannot sleep if he is not there.  I assume I'll be uncomfortable and need to stop a few times to use the restroom and walk around.  Are you all taking one car?  Would you be able to alternate and sit in the back and have your legs up on the seats??  Is the trip now?  If it were later in the pregnancy I probably wouldn't go but if it was now I would probably be able to tolerate it.  Good luck!

  • I would be able but about stopping alot I don't think my parents would want to since they are set on a schedule especially my dad oh man I don't want to be uncomfortable for that long... and I would have to ask my OBGYN as well... yes we are all going in one car it would be my dad mom and baby brother. So far I think I'm leaning to no but I felt like I wanted to go but I think my body won't be able to take it ....
  • What's at the end of this fabulous road trip?  Or you literally just driving around for 18 hours?

  • It's a trip to visit my dad's family and go site seeing
  • I get back pain if I sit in the car for a long time without being able to get up and stretch. How many days is this 18 hours of driving spread out over? Stopping every 2 hours for the restroom and stretching would be my minimum.
  • I recently did a 41 hour round trip road trip (on emergency). It was miserable. Because it was on emergency our circumstances were different and we had to do it as quick as we could so we stopped as little as possible. But being in the car for such a long time made me the grumpiest woman in the world. Unless you would be stopping frequently, have lots of room to stretch out, pillows to help with comfortability, and lots of snacks to help any nausea or anything that may creep up I wouldn't do it willingly.
  • I did a 13 hour road trip at the beginning of May. We had to stop every 3 hours then. I'd recommend just asking your folks if they can accommodate stretch breaks every 2 hours or so and go from there.
  • I just did a 17-hour one split into two days. We stopped every 2-4 hours. I walked around a lot of parking lots. The worst part was my tailbone! It got sore, but a pillow helped. Then again, I love road trips, so I didn't really question if I wanted to do it or not. Depends on your level of tolerance, I suppose!
  • I just drove/rode 7.5 hours from PA to Maine and back (just got back Friday actually). The last hour each way was a bitch on my back and butt/tailbone, hips. I'm 26 weeks along if that helps. I wouldn't go any later in pregnancy. It's just too much. Also add on more hours for stopping to pee at least every two hours. I hated it!

  • I'm actually in Florida now, from central New York. It was about 25 hours one way (we had six dogs with us, so stopping was frequent). If they are against stopping at least every 2 or 3 hours, don't go. It is absolutely miserable. And even if you don't have to go when you take an exit, you will be running to the bathroom when you stand up to stretch.
  • Thank everyone this is really helping me see I think I'm not gonna head on this trip I know my parents are not going to stop every 2 hours (because they will take longer to gey there) and I know I would need to stop if a 30 min drive I am uncomfortable with tailbone pain I won't be able to make it. Wow its crazy how much my body changed from when I wasn't pregnant haha I didn't think I was going to get all theses pains and aches.
