FF nipple?

FTM over here and did no research and bought first essentials bottles from Walmart. Idk if she collapses the nipple or it gets clogged or what but she could be "eating" for half an hour and there's none missing then I'll take it and find it back and it could be half gone in about 15mins. That being said, any nipple suggestions? She's not a gassy baby so I don't need to worry about that. Maybe something that flows faster? I'm not sure /: I do have one dr. Brown bottle that works a lot better, but so many parts.
Also do you need to buy nipples the same brand as the bottle.? I noticed the nipple from the dr brown bottle leaks if I use it on these

Re: FF nipple?

  • My sister FF and uses the wideneck playtex VentAire bottles. She likes these because they leak the least. I've used walmart's parents choice bottles with success, but my son was almost a year old at the time.

I think standard neck bottle/nipples are fairly interchangable, but I haven't tried many pairings.

If she's having to work really hard and not getting anywhere or its taking 30 to 45 min to eat 3 to 4 oz from a bottle then I would suggest a faster flowing nipple. I had to move my guy to a medium flowing nipple around 4 weeks because he was getting frustrated. he would suck, suck, suck and then spit the bottle out and be so mad. It was taking 45 min to an hour to eat 3oz. Moving him to the medium flowing nipple was the best thing we did. He eats happily now and it only takes like 15 min.
As for a bottle suggestion I also love the playtex vent aire. They do have a few parts when you take them apart but are very easy to clean and simple to put together. I used them when I was a nanny and have used them for both my boys. They are great. The doc browns are good but I felt like I couldn't get them clean enough...hard to scrub the inside of the straw-like part.

  • Ok I wasn't even sure if 30-45 mins was too long for 3-4oz, kinda relieved to know it is lol
  • I would say it is for a bottle....i know sometimes a feeding from the breast at this age can take that long but from a bottle it seems like baby is working too hard. I would suggest buying a faster flowing nipple than you currently are using and try it. If it floods baby and seem like it's too much for her than you just go back to the slower nipple for a while. Motherhood can often just feel like a bunch of trial and error.... the important thing is just remembering to try and then do what works for baby.
  • You can also try to losen the cap/nipple a little bit... I've found that can help the flow.
  • I tried numerous bottle/nipple combinations and found that Playtex was the best for us. We use their Natural Latch nipples with both the Vent Aire and Drop Ins. If she's collapsing the nipple then she needs a faster flow. However, keep in mind that the flow rate is specific to the bottle/brand and not a standard measure. A medium flow nipple from one brand is not the same as a medium nipple from another. If you like your current bottle try a faster flow like another poster did, but if you change brands sll together you might want to start slow again.
