I'm going to make things even more overwhelming for you and suggest also looking into Moby baby carries and other wraps. I'm right in the middle of the stroller/car seat research myself and the only thing I've decided for sure is that I'm wrapping my baby as much as possible for the first 6 months or so.
I highly recommend the Chicco Keyfit 30! Ours was a hand-me-down from my sister. When my daughter was 7 months old we got in a super bad car accident. Both the airbags went off and the car was totaled. My sweet baby did not have a scratch or bruise on her! We had her checked out at ER for peace of mind and took her to a chiropractor. My sister also gave us her stroller. It was a Snap N Go which the car seat just snapped right into. Once they grow out of the car seat you are done with the stroller, though. There's no like seat to put a child in or anything.
I have the Chicco Keyfit 30 travel system and love it. I've had no issues with it and it is very easy to use. We bought a second base for DHs car and just click the infant carrier into it. DD stayed in the infant seat until she was 11 months old.
We have the chicco keyfit 30 and snap n go stroller as well. It worked really well for us. When DD outgrew the infant seat we went to a graco stroller and car seat. I used an Ergo baby carrier for grocery shopping etc because I didn't feel safe putting the car seat on the basket and in the cart took up too much room.
I'm a big fan of the Britax brand. I currently have the B-ready stroller and their stage two carseat for my DD. We had the B-agile but it got stollen off of our front porch, we then went to the B-ready because it converts into a double and is a click and go system with infant carrier (still need to purchase one of those.) The B agile is very light and folds with one hand. I would recommend it in a heart beat.
With my DD our first stroller and infant carrier was a Baby Trend expedition (one of the massive three wheel strollers at a good price point). I had no issues with the infant carrier but the stroller is self was heavy, huge, a pain to fold and the front wheel needed new ball bearings within the first three months. Which is why we just bought the Britax - we wanted something more reliable.
Britax has an amazing warranty, For example there is a built in diaper bag on the B-agaile and my zipper kept splittig and eventually spilt beyond repair. I called Britax to see if they could send me a new part. Instead the woman on the phone send me a brand new model year newer stroller! I was so impressed I will never buy anything else.
For those living in the US I found the site www.pishposhbaby.com to have amazing deals - got my B-ready for $350.00 with free shipping and no tax. I'm from Canada so I did have to ship it to a warehouse in Buffalo NY and go pick it up but the regular cost of that strolled at Babies R Us here is $559.99. I only live an hour from the can\us boarder so pick up for me was not an issue at all.
Sorry for the long winded post. I just love me some Britax and don't want you FTMs to make the mistake I did and soley buy a travel system for price point and not do any research.
A lot of women love the Chicco system, but that didn't make sense to me because the stroller base is completely useless after you stop using the carrier. You have to buy another stroller, which seems like a waste of money to me. My sister did this based on recommendations and only used the stroller base once or twice (though we live in a suburb - might be different if you walk a lot in the city).
I like the Graco LiteRider system because you can keep using the stroller after your baby is out of the carrier. It only weighs 5 pounds more than the Snap N' Go, and I can easily open it with one hand. It's also extremely affordable.
If you are a runner or walker, you may want to look into a system that has a jogging stroller for the base. They're not very practical when in tighter spaces (like a mall or shopping area), but I keep a cheapie umbrella stroller in the car for those situations, anyway. I bought my jogger separately, but I probably would've gone with that system had I known about it because it's the stroller that gets the most use.
We wanted to go as non toxic as possible without sacrificing safety of course. We used Nuna for infant seats and just switched to Clek Foonf convertibles. Britax recently made a big move to less toxic materials.
I saw an earlier post about taking a hand me down. Please do not take hand me downs or buy used from anyone who you don't know or trust (PP got from sister but a lot of ppl but online). Car seats can't be used once they've been in an even minor collision.
I say this but I'm hoping to sell one of my Nunas. Since we have two (twins) and are going to keep one for the new baby I'm hoping it'll give someone enough confidence when I set both out and tell them to pick one and we'll use the other for our new baby.
I love the britax line! Albeebaby.com has them for great prices. And I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on an infant seat when most of my friends say they won't be in them for much longer than 6 months anyways. I saw it for about $140-160 on albeebaby which is cheaper than the Chicco keyfit. Plus I'm a sucker for plain, black car seats. Idk why lol. Once the baby grows out of the infant seat we will probably go with a convertible seat that will last till they are 6 or so
Eta: I watched videos on the baby Ktan and it looks so simple so I'm hopefully gonna use that to wear baby
Skip a snap and go and just did a stroller you like that you can get an attachment for the infant seat. I didn't liked graci infant carrier and will be getting something different for this baby. I ended up with a baby jogger city mini I think it is and I like it but now will be selling for the city select since it can have two seats. Something to keep in mind when you are shopping as well. Downside to the city mini is there isn't a lot of storage room underneath. I have the ktan wrap and love it plus an ergo that I never used as I got it a little too late. If money is no object look at the orbit systems. I love the infant carrier and really want one for this baby but that would also mean getting the stroller system as well. There's plenty of comparison websites but I highly recommend going to buy buy baby to look at them personally look at them. Another stroller to look at is the uppababy vista as well. Pretty much the same as the city select but the storage space is larger and it comes with the bassinet.
I loved my Chicco Keyfit 30. I did the Liteway Plus travel system...so the car seat snaps into the stroller. After that phase, you switch it around and it's a slimmer stroller for your kid to sit in. I loved it because it's slim and light, this way it didn't take up too much room, since I left it in my car at all times. I also got an attachment for my BOB jogging stroller, so I could snap my car seat into that as well.
Also since people are bringing up carriers, I'll throw my 2 cents in. I had a Moby and an Ergo. I am personally more of a wrap person, but my husband liked the Ergo once our son was older. Anyways I'm doing the Solly wrap this time around. I loved the Moby, but it's very thick and my son always ran hot...plus I live in the desert. The Solly is very light and thin...and so cute!
This time I'll probably do the Chicco Keyfit again, then the sit and stand frame stroller and a double BOB jogging stroller. I'll also use the wrap for most errands.

We really LOVED the stroller base because there is a ton of space underneath where you put the car seat for the diaper bag and shopping purchases, jackets, etc. once we no longer had the car seat we just went to a $20 umbrella stroller and now we'll buy a double stroller, so we didn't have to make a big purchase once we were done with the snap n go.
DH has a pretty small car and he'll be the main baby transporter so we're going with the Graco snug ride 30, smallest and lightest we can find. I only want one stroller and I've tried a bunch in person, we both like the city mini gt so we want to go with that and just need to buy the adapter for the car seat. Done.
I also used the Chicco Keyfit 30. I was very happy with it and will use the same for this baby.
For stroller, I didn't want the system because those strollers are so big and bulky and hard to steer. I went with the Baby Jogger City Mini and absolutely love it. It's very light weight and we use it everywhere from walks in the neighborhood to the zoo. No need for any other stroller. It's similar to the britax b-agile. We went the the store and test drove both. I don't think you can go wrong with either.
If you are looking to spend a little more, I would love a Bob. Those are super nice.
I've been looking at wraps, @daninikicoli, and love the look/feel of the Solly. Good to know that the Moby is super thick. I'll probably stay away from it then! Thanks for the input!

I need to research this. I have heard about it and seen moms who use them, but really I know nothing about them. Very curious.
As for a stroller we are 100% getting the baby jogger city select. It has 16 different seating options, grows with your baby and family... Adjusts to multiple children and is very versatile, and durable. Great wheels! My best friend has one and is about to move onto their 3rd child, it's all they have ever used and from the first time I saw it, I knew it was the one I wanted!!
Car seats I'm not sure. But I'm planning on being a long term rear facing mama.
Ahh, my head just about explodes when thinking of these decisions lol. Anyone else? Lol. Too many choices!!!!! Lol. Thank god there's still time to research & figure out!!

Yes! Also my best friend is a research freak so she always has soon much to tell me and secretly it stresses me out because I'm so overwhelmed and afraid if i make decisions she doesn't agree with and can't justify my reasoning as well as her she will judge me.
I have the Chico keyfit 30 and live it. We have the lightweight stroller that accepts the car seat and it is great. Now that he is in a convertible seat instead of the carrier , we have a nice lightweight stroller for him.
I used to sell higher end car seats and strollers (Recaro, Uppa Baby, Orbit, Stokke, etc) and here are my general tips and pointers I gave to customers who were just starting out:
1. ALL car seats and strollers, regardless of cost and brand, must meet the same safety standards to be legally sold in the U.S. If you're buying new, stores legally have to check on safety recalls and standards, so you don't need to worry about safety standards unless you're really concerned. I'd never recommend buying a used car seat, but if you purchase a used stroller, make sure to google recalls before purchasing.
2. Think about your lifestyle. Will you ever actually use that jogging stroller you bought to go jogging? Will you need to convert your stroller to accommodate more than one child in the future? How easy are the products to move, install, collapse? Do you want a 30-40 lb stroller, or would a lightweight umbrella stroller be enough for you since you plan on using a carrier most of the time? Think about how active you'll be and how often you'll be using the product to give you a good starting point.
3. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing products that convert to multiple ages/weight limits. You'll get a lot more for your dollar if you buy a convertible car seat that ranges 5-70 lbs. versus buying an infant car seat that suits 5-15, and then having to buy a toddler car seat or booster later on. That being said, the Chicco Key Fit that many people have mentioned is nice because you can transfer a sleeping infant from car to stroller without having to move or wake them up, so think about the pros and cons of each style.
4. It's a lot easier to decide if a product will work, if you can actually get your hands on it. Visit your local baby store, Target, Toys R Us, and ask an employee to demo all the features. How does the stroller collapse? Where is the break? How do you adjust the size settings? Some strollers can be very basic while others have a lot of fancy features and add ons. Ask lots of questions, and play around with what you think will work for you and your family.
I know it can seem very overwhelming looking at hundreds of products that at first glance all seem the same, but narrow things down by price point and style, and you should be in good shape! Good luck ladies!!
I have a Peg Perego 30/30 bucket seat and other than the fact that it is a little heavy, I like it. I also have the matching stroller (Peg Perego Pliko 4) that the car seat clips into (and later on can be used as a regular stroller) and I love it. I don't find that it takes up a lot of room or is too heavy. I use it almost every day! Now that DS is in a convertable seat, I have him in the Radian RXT (5-120lbs). He is still rear facing and can be up to 45lbs!
We have a City Mini GT stroller and our Graco Snugride Click Connect 40 infant car seat snaps right in with two little adapters on the sides just like the Britax B-Agile set but the stroller is nicer (all terrain) and the car seat is nicer (no re-thread harness plus higher height and weight limit). Our specific stroller is from Honest Co and it's gorgeous! We also have the City Mini GT double and I love both of the strollers. Such nice quality!

Stroller- City Mini. I loved it so much we also got the double version when we had our second. I can't say enough good things about it. The single can go through the conveyor belt at airport security (HUGE time saver) and it is so easy for getting in and out of cars. Also, if you're a city dweller, it's easy on public transit too. It's easy to maneuver, great storage, just all around love.
My car seat advice is based on urban living, so it may not be helpful. We used the Safety First OnBoard 35- great if you need to move it from car to car or use in cabs.
I second the wraps and carriers. I will purchase a convertible car seat, but otherwise will be babywearing. I'm looking to buy a few woven wraps, a stretchy wrap for colder weather, a few ring slings and a Mei Tai for my husband and in-laws to use when they want to carry LO.
