I think it's both adorable and probably not the most necessary financially but I couldn't resist!! I got ours off etsy and I'm so excited to hang it. I plan on maybe hanging it over the glider or the changing table area
We had two: one we bought that fit our color scheme for DD and one we acquired from my brother and SIL. The one we bought was a bust. It was cute to us but worthless in terms of entertaining DD. The one we acquired was like this one:
We actually really liked that we could turn it on and shut it off without going up to the mobile itself. The lights were great, and the music was adjustable.
My son was the type who never wanted to be put down. We had a wind up one that played music that my son really liked for awhile. Only problem was it only lasted for about 60 seconds before It needed to be wound again. At that point it wasn't worth it to us to buy a battery operated one, but I feel like if it had run a little bit longer it would have given me enough time to take a quick shower without him screaming the whole time.
I agree a total waste of money...but I love them and I can't recall my son needing one to get to sleep but none the less I would put it on for him at nights !!!!
I agree they are over priced and not necessary. That being said I saw some cute and super easy DIY ones on pinterest. They are made with things like paper, pom-poms, or felt. I thought it'd be a fun and inezpensive craft for me so I am making one.
It ended up being a waste for us because by the time our DDs were actually in their crib (6mos) they needed to come off. Not planning on getting one for this LO.
I don't think they're necessary, but they sure are cute and do potentially provide visual stimulation (don't have to be electronic / moving / etc. in my opinion). That being said I will get one or two from my sister as hand-me-downs (possibly the one I bought for her first baby!) so I'm not actually investing money in one myself.
Mobiles are an excellent way to help develop baby's spacitial awareness. However, I found a lot of the ones at the stores seemed expensive and stimulating for something we would want to help baby drift off so I made my own. This is the ou picture I have on my phone of it.

We didn't at first with DS, but his pack and play came with one and he was just enthralled with it so we ended up getting one for his crib. Here is a link to the video with him watching it (and swinging in his swing) https://youtu.be/oS2WFJrbH40
I knit one from a pattern I found on ravelry! Made with cotton yarn I got on sale $1/color. The top was an embroidery hoop, wrapped in brown yarn, with two shades of green leaves all around. He loved it!
